Mrs. Argie Nell Allen was born October 31, 1923 in Wesson, Mississippi to the union of Perry and Blanche Roberson. She went to her eternal rest Monday, October 4, 2021 at her residence surrounded by loving family members.
Mrs. Allen’s early childhood was spent in Wesson, MS. She was educated in Wesson’s public school through eighth grade. She attended and graduated high school at Alexander High School in Brookhaven, MS. She also attended Alcorn Agriculture and Mechanical College in Lorman, MS in 1955.
Argie married Robert J. Allen Sr. on December 15, 1941. To this union, 4 children were born: 1 son and 3 daughters. The family relocated to Barberton, OH in November of 1957 and moved to Akron in 1961.
She was baptized at an early age in Wesson, MS. She united with the Livingstone Baptist Church on November 11, 1959. In 1974 she moved her church membership to Victory Baptist Church under the pastorate of Reverend Robert Allen. In May of 1988 she and her husband reunited with The Livingstone Baptist Church where she served as an usher, church clerk, choir president and as a chair person on the Mother’s Board that was established in 2011 by Pastor Watson.
Mrs. Allen was employed at Akron General Hospital as head baker for 9 years from the late 1950’s to the early 1960’s. She worked in the Jeanes Teaching Program in the 1940’s. She always had a passion for learning and teaching. She also was employed part-time at Summit County Board of Elections.
She enjoyed crafting, sewing, millinery, cooking, crosswords, puzzles and studying the Bible. Her favorite scripture was I Corinthians 13:1, which speaks to her demeanor and personality.
She was preceded in death by parents, Perry and Blanche Roberson; husband of 58 years, Reverend Robert J. Allen Sr.; grandson, Reverend Darryl Gard; brother, Pearl Roberson; sisters, Christine Roberson, Ruthie B. Patterson, Willie Bell Smith, Lillian Webb, Kate Parks, Marie Roberson and Dora Roberson.
She is survived by her son, Robert J. Allen Jr. (Akron, OH); daughters, Patricia (Theodore) Dent (Akron, OH), Christine Washington (Akron, OH) and Valetta Austin (Columbia SC); grand-daughters, Michelle (Bryan) Bailey (Cleveland, OH), Vaniqua Austin (Columbia, SC) and SGT. Michelle Tate (Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, GA); grandson, Nicholas Washington (Akron, OH); great grand-daughters, Valerie L. Austin, Brniya Bailey, Crystal Bailey, Lanaia, Kayle, and Avari; great grand-sons, De’Ron Gard, D’Anthony Washington, Elijah, Marshawn, Dierre, Kayden and DaVonte Bailey; special niece, Ollie Brunson; extended family, Deloris Davis and family; a host of nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews, as well as many other relatives and friends.
