Armenia Moss Ashby was born in Benham KY to Green Moss and Ina Brand Moss July 15, 1935. Armenia was the seventh out of the eleven children. Even though the Moss clan was large, they were a very close-knit family. In 1952, Armenia graduated from Benham High School under the tutelage of Mr. and Mrs. Matthews. During the same year, she migrated to Cleveland OH to join her sisters Anna and Walta Lou. Armenia worked several different jobs such, bank teller at Cleveland Trust Bank, Stouffer’s Foods, Mr. Coffee, Cuyahoga County Board of Mental Retardation and Kaiser Permanente. While attending church at Olivet Institutional Baptist Church she met and married Joe Allen Ashby on February 22, 1958. From this union there came three Children: Lester C. Ashby, Timothy M. Ashby, and Kimberly A. Ashby-Hewlett.
Armenia was a very outgoing and fun individual. Whenever you asked her how she was doing, she would respond, “Fantabulous”. She was a soldier in God’s army so much that she flooded her home with the gospel. She would have the radio playing gospel music and sermons while she was cooking in the kitchen. Everybody that knew her knew that she was the Queen in the kitchen. Armenia would often try new recipes and did an outstanding job on the traditional southern cooking. Armenia was a stranger to no one, she talked to everyone and witnessed whenever possible. She had a heart for children, she often would take other children home from her children’s extracurricular activities. She never minded when her children had other kids over for meals.
Armenia loved going to church and participating in the “food ministry’, at Mega Church on the near westside of Cleveland. She took her children to church all their lives knowing that if, “you train a child in the way they should go and when they get old, they will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6. She loved having theological debates with friends and family and we had quite a few. She loved her grandchildren and would often take them on outings during the summertime.
As Armenia got older and could no longer attend church, she would spend her Sundays watching sermons on television and listening to gospel music on YouTube. She also enjoyed “Martial Arts” movies that referred to as, “Chop Chop” movies.
