Arvie Hunt was the third of three children born to Christiana and Houston Gandy in 1922 in Georgiana, Alabama. Her father worked on the railroad, and he also had a farm. Her mother was a homemaker. She confessed Christ at an early age. One of her favorite Bible Verses was John 3:16 . . . For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. As a youth, Arvie attended boarding school and was very athletic. She was a very good basketball player. Arvie moved to Cleveland, Ohio with her mother in 1940 to help care for her aunt. She became a member of New Bethlehem Baptist Church also in 1940. She fell in love and married John Hunt at New Bethlehem Baptist Church on November 8, 1942, and from this union Vaughn, Ralph and Colleen were born.
Arvie worked and retired from Fairhill Hospital after 18 years of service. She loved to bowl, knit, and cook. Her specialty was making German Chocolate Cake. She also exercised weekly at the Warrensville Heights Senior Citizen Center which attributed to her longevity. She was very active serving as an usher on the New Bethlehem Baptist Church Usher Board and received certificates of appreciation for her faithfulness to God and the New Bethlehem Baptist Church.
Arvie received a wonderful written acknowledgment from the President of the United States of America (President Biden) in celebration of her 100th birthday.
After Arvie, her brother, Cecil and sister, Houstine retired, they took they took many summer vacation road trips driving to every state in the union. Arvie also took special California trips to visit with her daughter, Colleen, and Canton, Ohio trips to visit with her son, Vaughn.
Arvie passed away on June 19, 2025. Proceeding her in death are her husband, John Hunt; sister, Houstine Roper, and brother, Cecil Gandy. Left to cherish her memory are three children, Vaughn Hunt (Marcia/Nita), Ralph Hunt and Colleen Martin (Dale); seven grandchildren, John (Tara) Hunt, Lisa (Kevin) Leaphart, Micah Hunt, Joshua Hunt, Semika (Steve) Miller, John Harris, Sherry Martin; seven great grandchildren, Ashaunte Hoey, Lawren Hoey, Braylon Hunt, Harmony Howard; Kevin Leaphart Jr. (Aminah), Damien Johnson, Chelle Brown; and four great-great grandchildren, Kaisen Tinch, Blake Eddins, Dakota Johnson and Ava Brown and a host of family and friends.
