Barbara Jean Jones Berger was born in Beckley West Virginia on August 7th 1939. Her parents
were George Russell Berger (Father) and Thelma P. Berger (Mother)Cook. As a young child,
Barbara lost her only infant brother and soon later her mother both due to illness. She then went
to live with her grandma Berger and also with her grandmother Alice and “Doc” Cook. She loved
West Virginia and there she developed her love for eating corn. She later moved to Cleveland,
Ohio to live with her father George Berger and stepmother Willa Berger and a host of sisters
Sylvia, Crystal, Piper, and China. Barbara later returned to West Virginia and got her High
School diploma at Stratton High School. She later returned to her 17th class reunion and was
very, very excited about going and visiting her friends and family again. In Cleveland, through
close friends named Kenny and Barbara Summers; Barbara met a musician named Don
Gregory Jones while he was performing at Gleason Showplace. In 1961, they married and had
two sons, Kirk and Dale Jones. They resided on 106th and Glenville Rd until they moved to their
new home in 1967 on 1756 Fay Street in East Cleveland for the remainder of their lives.
Barbara often enjoyed cooking for all the holiday parties in the backyard at the big house for old
friends and new relatives. Barbara along with her husband put in 50+ years of service to a
Huron Road Hospital before they both retired. Barbara always knew and loved the Lord from her
childhood church, Mount Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Nelson B.
Staples in West Virginia. In Cleveland, she was called to The Greater Friendship Baptist Church
under the leadership of Reverend Nelson in her years of service. After Reverend Nelson retired,
she found herself under the new leadership of Reverend Doctor Larry W. Howard, at which is
known now as The Historic. Greater Friendship Baptist Church. She joined the choir and
remained faithful in her ministry. Barbara received various awards for her services while serving
the Lord, but she was most proud of her award for her work for evangelizing all of her sisters
and other family members to join her church all in one Sunday morning service. Barbara was
loved by everyone she met, talked to, gave advice to, gave a listening ear to, cried with, or
laughed with. They all loved her the same and she loved them the same, she always offered a
kind word and a beautiful smile . On behalf of everyone who’s known you, we will miss you, we
Love You, and Long Live Our Queen.
From your family, with Love
