Bennie Robert Blackwell Sr., affectionately known as “Pap” was born on February 22, 1934 in Monticello, Georgia (Jasper County), to the late Lucian and Matilda Blackwell. On October 15, 2025, Bennie peacefully departed this life at the blessed age of 91.
Bennie was a longtime resident of Akron, Ohio, where he made his home for more than 80 years. He was the youngest son of six children and attended Lampson Richardson School in Marshallville, Georgia.
Bennie was known for his strong work ethic and commitment to his family. He worked for Summit Fish Market and later retired from Babcock and Wilcox in Barberton Ohio. Bennie took great pride in providing for his loved ones and was admired for his dependability and faithfulness.
Bennie leaves behind a rich legacy of love, laughter, and faith. To know him was to know a man who loved the Lord first and foremost, and that love overflowed to his family and friends, and community. “Pap” was the kind of man who made you feel welcomed.
Bennie found great joy in fishing—especially teaching others how to fish,—in hunting wildlife,—and in gardening. He was a master gardener whose immaculate yard stood as a reflection of his care, discipline, and pride.
Bennie’s dedication to excellence extended far beyond his own home. He received the Keep Akron Beautiful awards multiple years in a row, honoring his outstanding landscaping.
His creativity truly shined during the holidays. His extraordinary Christmas Light displays were famous throughout the community and even featured on local news stations.
Bennie was preceded in death by his wives; Mamie Stembridge, Phouthong Blackwell; his brothers: James; Lucian Jr; John E. Blackwell; and his sister: Ida Mae Blackwell, Daughters: Sharletta (Poochie) Stembridge/Smiley, Beatrice Harris, Elaine Bell-Moore, Sons: Lamonte Stembridge, Gary Harris, Bennie(Choke)Blackwell Jr.
He leaves to cherish his memory, Sister: Mattie L. Blue, Children: Evelyn Smith, Brenda Collins, Willie Harris, Shirley Blackwell-Lewis, Carolyn Blackwell-Barnes, Celia (Steve) Smith, Kenny Stembridge, Ralph Stembridge, Anton Stembridge.
He is also survived by 54 grandchildren, 103 great-grandchildren, 46 great-great grandchildren, and
2 godchildren—along with a host of nieces and nephews, bonus children and dear friends.
A special niece, Thelma (Jitty) Nicholson-Williams, held a special place in his heart.
He will be truly missed, but his light will live forever. His legacy will continue to shine through the lives of all who were blessed to know him
