Brother Bernard Jewell was born June 29, 1940, in Birmingham, Alabama to William Jewell Sr. and Bessie (Young) Jewell, both deceased. He was one of nine children, William Jewell Jr. (deceased), Clara Brookins (Deceased), Roy Thomas Jewell (deceased), Betty Quarles (deceased), Shirley Nelson (Bedford, Ohio), Valencia Curry (deceased), Reese Jewell (Birmingham, Alabama), and Leonard Jewell ( Birmingham, Alabama).
Bernard was educated in Birmingham and accepted Jesus as his Savor at an early age. At the age of 18 he moved to Cleveland, Ohio and lived with his sister Betty and late brother-in-law Donald Quarles. A few years later, he was introduced to Gloria J. Clark (whom he nicknamed Dolly) by his late brother-in-law Charles Clark. It was love at first sight. Two years later he got off work and went to Gloria and said “come on Dolly, let’s get married and get this over with”. They were married 54 years ago, here at Mt. Nebo by the late Pastor Booker T. Nelson on May 3, 1969. He loved his children Glenn, Tracey, and Brian Bernard.
All who knew him knew he was always a hardworking man and sometimes he held down three jobs to take care of his family. He was an excellent interior and exterior painter and was an all-around Handy Man which included plumbing, some electricity work, home remodeling and building decks. He did this work for people all over the city and for many of the church members a Mt Nebo, including our late Pastor Thompson whom he loved dearly. He also worked for the City of Cleveland for over 30 years retiring from the 5th District in Collinwood in 2014. He was named employee of the month several times.
He first joined Mt. Nebo under the pastorate of the late Booker T. Nelson. Years later he renewed his membership under the late Pastor Ernest L. Thompson.
He was a very special and compassionate man who cared about people and loved his family. He cherished his wife Gloria (Dolly) and always remembered her birthday and their anniversary. He loved family gatherings and cookouts and looked forward to sharing the holidays with them.
Brother Bernard leaves to mourn His wife Gloria, 3 children, Glen, Tracey and Brian, 10 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, one sister Shirley Nelson (Bedford, Ohio), 2 brothers, Reese Jewell, Leonard Jewell (Linda) both from Birmingham, Alabama) 1 brother-in-law, Moses Clark Jr, 2 sister-in-law, Jane Rochelle Tatum and Janet R.
