Betty was born in Crawfordsville, Arkansas, in 1946 to the late James Tate, Sr. and Mabel Anderson, and was later lovingly raised by her stepfather, Roscoe Anderson. She eventually made Cleveland her home, where she built a life rooted in family, hard work, and community.
Betty married the love of her life, Willie B. Johnson, and together they raised a family filled with love, laughter, and faith. She had a long and dedicated career with the Cleveland Municipal School District, where she served for 30 years before retiring. Retirement didn’t slow her down—Betty returned to the district as a part-time crossing guard, where she brought joy and safety to countless children each day. She deeply loved the kids and the connections she made in her community.
Known for her friendly spirit and gift of conversation, Betty never met a stranger. She had a way of making everyone feel welcomed and loved. Her warmth, her laughter, and her kindness will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Tate, Sr. and Mabel Anderson; her stepfather, Roscoe Anderson; her brothers, James Tate and Anthony Anderson; and her beloved husband, Willie B. Johnson.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Lequinda Johnson and Natasha Johnson; her sisters, Regina Garrett (Clarence) and Marilyn Anderson; grandchildren Tanisha Brown, Akiya Johnson, Shonita Brown, Christopher Johnson, Tyrone Ruff, Tatyana Ruff, Prince Brown, Princess Brown, and Tanayshia Johnson; along with 16 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
