Betty  J. Portis, went home to be with the Lord November  6, 2019.  Betty was born in Union Spring, Alabama to the late  Elder Oscar and Annie Pearl Jones.  She was one of 11 siblings.  Betty graduated from East High School.  Betty (Big Mom) was a loving mother and devoted foster parent to over 100 children in her home.  She loved gardening and cooking.   She was very soft-spoken, funny and she loved bringing her family together.

Betty believed that working with children was her calling.  She started volunteering with children at Schumacher School helping in every way she could.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar Sr. and Annie Pearl Jones; sibling, Minnie Jackson, Mary Solomon, Doris Reed, Oscar Jones Jr.

She leaves to cherish her memory; siblings, Margie Bell, Francis Jenkins, Glady (Otis) Brown, Houston Jones, and Jonathan Jones; children, Andrea Lewis, Lawrence Small Jr., Kathy (Melvin) Davis, Darlene (Pierre) Irvine, Gail (Michael) Brooks, Ronald Portis, Melody (Jerome) Portis, Brenda Daniels, Ashley Portis, Mariah Portis and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
