Betty Jean Weems was born on November 18, 1934 in Atlanta, Georgia, to the late George & Ruby Gullatt Sr., and was the oldest of nine siblings. She was called home to eternal rest on Friday, November 18, 2022.
Betty accepted Christ at an early age. She spent her childhood and early adulthood in Atlanta, and married William A. Weems Sr. To this union, two children were born, Racine and William A. Weems Jr. She and William Sr. were married until his passing in 1982.
Betty attended Salem Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA. Upon moving to Cleveland, Ohio, she joined Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, under the leadership of Dr. R. L. Fuller. She later became affiliated with Emmanuel AME Zion church, where she sang in the choir and served faithfully until her death. She was a soloist and would travel to different churches to sing, at their requests. She also played the piano and organ.
She graduated from the Atlanta Public School System. She also attended business school in Cleveland, where she excelled in shorthand.
Betty lived to see and vote for Barack Obama, the first black president of the United States of America. She worked and retired from J & L Steel Corporation. After retiring, she enjoyed her life to the fullest by traveling, cooking and spending time with family and friends. She also enjoyed singing throughout the city when called upon. She was adored and loved by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings, Dollie Mae Blackwell, Helen Ruth Crenshaw, Annie Lavinia Landers, and Ralph S. Gullatt.
Betty leaves to cherish her love and memory, her children, Racine (Glynn) Crawford and William A. (Brenda) Weems Jr.; special friend, Larry Johnson; siblings, George A. (Barbara) Gullatt, Shirley R. Sullivan of Atlanta, Patricia A. Wilmore of Cleveland; niece, Cassandra Sullivan of Atlanta; nephew, George W. Sullivan, III; grandchildren, Shayla, Xavier and William A. Weems III; great grandchildren, Xoriah, Xyonna, Xerique, Kaii and Kaylee.
