Beulah Mae Dixon Hardy was born to the Matrimonial Union, of the late David Dixon and Estella McClain Dixon, in Lenoir County, North Carolina. She was born the ninth child of 14 children to this Loving Christian Couple. Beulah gave her life to the Lord at a young age to her Home Church of “Little Creek Baptist Church”. Beulah attended Hookerton Elementary School and Green County Training High School where she excelled immensely and graduated with Honors. While in High School, Beulah was a very active and sociable student. Beulah joined the Debate Team, The Glee Club and became the Captain of the Basketball Team. These social activities helped to enhance and develop Beulah’s excellent communications skills. Beulah married the love of her life Army Sergeant Willie Cullen Hardy, Sr. in 1954. Beulah went through two (2) Army Tours with her husband, and they were blessed with two (2) beautiful daughters (Brenda Faye) the eldest and (Lillie Mae) second who was born in Anchorage, Alaska at Fort Richardson Army Base while serving his country. After completing his second tour he returned home to North Carolina receiving his Honorable Discharge. Upon their return to North Carolina members of his family told Willie C. he would have greater economic opportunities if he moved the family to Ohio which he did. Willie C. always wanted a large family because he grew up as an only child, so Willie C. and Beulah decided to grow their family in Ohio. Beulah gave birth to six (6) more Hardy children: Patrice, Willie C. Jr., Jimmie, Jacqueline, Derrick, and Edwin. Beulah and Willie C. stressed the importance of being self-sufficient, independent, and educated to all (8) of their children.
Upon moving to Ohio and raising her children, she was passionate about learning and wanted to further her education. Beulah became a seamstress at Joseph and Feiss, she was an LPN at Mt. Sinai Hospital and a dietitian at the Cleveland House of Corrections (Workhouse) during her early years of her career. She was able to obtain her Associate Degree at MTI Business College and she received a H & R Block certificate. She helped her husband by working a non- traditional role at LTV Steel for thirteen years to help supplement the family livelihood. She had to manage a career and nurture a relationship with her husband while also caring for extended family members and her own family. She was very resourceful and a master of balancing multiple roles. She faced many challenges, but she was able to overcome each and every one of them. Momma was everything to us: her favorite quote was “Don’t worry about nothing but pray about everything.”
Beulah and Willie C. loved to travel, she enjoyed going shopping, reading her bible, cooking and visiting a casino or two. She was a lover of all sports, but her favorite was basketball, her team was the Cleveland Cavaliers and LeBron James was her ADOPTED Grandson when he played for the team.
