Billy was born in Walnut, MS, on April 29th, 1942, and he was the third of seven
children born to John Henry and Lazener Black. His early years were spent in
Walnut, MS, where he attended school and later graduated from Tippah
County High in Ripley, MS. Following his graduation, Billy moved to Cleveland,
OH, embarking on a new chapter away from his roots. His love for travel was a
defining characteristic of his life, and he was always on the road with a Road
Atlas in hand, exploring new places and experiencing different cultures.
Billy’s reputation as a barbecue aficionado, particularly with his mouthwatering ribs, was a highlight of his personality. He had a knack for making
gatherings memorable with his cooking, bringing people together around the
grill. In addition to his culinary talents, Billy was a master storyteller, often
sharing colorful tales from his past that captivated his listeners. His thoughtful
gestures extended to celebrating loved ones’ special occasions—he and his wife
Lula made a point of calling friends and family to sing “Happy Birthday” or
“Happy Anniversary,” ensuring that everyone felt cherished and remembered.
His warmth and generosity left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough
