He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Lyndsey Johnson; maternal grandparents, Rosie Lee (Spruell) Gardner and Andrew Gardner, Sr.; paternal grandparents, Laura (Edwards) Johnson and Thomas Johnson; special uncle, Ruben Gardner, Sr.; aunts, Pearly (Gardner) Harris, Gussie (Gardner) Jones, Earlene Gardner, Hermene (Gardner) Johnson, Sadie (Johnson) Wright, Evergreen (Johnson) Williams, Lucille (Johnson) Sims; and uncles, Theodore Johnson, Felix Johnson, Robert Johnson, Roosevelt Gardner, Andrew Gardner, Jr., Willie Gardner, and George Gardner.
