Carlton Powers Sr. was born on March 28, 1929, in Cleveland Ohio to Reeda Carlene Powers.
The Powers Family migrated north from West Point, Mississippi in the early 1920’s.
From an early age church attendance was emphasized, Providence Baptist church
was the Family church & Carlton’s first church membership. Eventually, his mother
married Josh Hill and moved the family to Twinsburg, Ohio in 1943. Once they moved to Twinsburg, Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church became his church home.
Carlton Sr attended Twinsburg Schools and East Technical High School where he excelled in academics. Friends considered him so intelligent & were sure that he would become a doctor one day. Hence his infamous nickname “Doc”. It was during his childhood in Twinsburg that he would meet Bernice “Bun” Golden. Carlton Sr. married Bernice Golden on April 23, 1949 and to this union seven (7) children were born.
In 1945 at the age of 16 he lost his mom and attempted to enlist in the Navy but was too young. So, he waited until 1946 to enlist in the
US Army where he served in the Western Pacific under General Douglas
McArthur in the Occupational Forces; 24th/25th Infantry Buffalo Soldiers Regiment.
Carlton Sr. was stationed in Japan and the Philippines where he quickly attained the rank of Sergeant. He earned the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation of Japan Medal while serving.
Years later in 2013 he was honored to represent the City of Twinsburg on the “Honor Flight”
to Washington DC when our country recognized the ‘greatest generation’.
During his work life he was employed at Van Dorn and Lewis Welding, but primarily worked and retired from the Chrysler Corporation in March 1989.
Carlton Sr. was a willing worker of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church for 80 years; he served in many capacities as Custodian, Handyman, the last original Choir & Male Chorus member, Gardener, Trustee, Sunday School teacher, VBS, and Deacon. He became an Ordained Deacon in 1960 and then Chairman of the Deacon Board in the early 1980’s and served until his sunset on January 4, 2022.
He was a True Soldier for Christ.
Carlton Sr. was preceded in death by the love of his life & wife, Bernice (Golden); his mother, Reeda “Belle” Hill (Powers), his only sister, Gloria Clark (Powers); Great Granddaughter, T’Nyshia Robertson; In-laws, Emmett Sr. & Christine Golden; Brothers-in-law, Emmett ‘Bro’ Golden, Jr., Ellis ‘Plooky’ Golden, Robert ‘Bob’ Golden & Harry Clark.
Carlton leaves to carry on his legacy seven children, Reeda C. Robertson (Fred), Carlton R. Powers Jr. “Babro”, JoAnn M. Harley (Melvin), Roberta D. Garrette (Otha), Tina L. Powers, Rhonda M. Gaines (Larry), and Annette J. McCrary (Dayvid, Sr); 24 grandchildren, 60 great grandchildren, 22 great great grandchildren; Brother in Law, Irvin “Hank” Golden, Sister in Law, Faye Golden and a host of Nephews, Nieces, Cousins and Family friends.
