Carrie Joanne McCoy passed away Sunday, April 28, 2019.
“Joan” as she was affectionately called was born to Thomas and Carrie Miller in Akron, OH on October 2, 1934.
She accepted the Lord at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Akron, OH as a young child. Joan was currently a member of Olivet Institutional Baptist Church, in Cleveland, OH. Joan used her talents to serve the Lord’s work at various churches throughout the greater Akron area as a pianist and organist.
Joan attended Akron Public Schools and graduated from West High School. She attended The Ohio State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Akron. Joan taught in the Akron Public and church private schools. She was an advocate of life long learning and quite adept in the world of technology. Joan believed education was the key to independence and demonstrated this by her example.
Joan loved traveling by train, bus, and went on several cruises. She enjoyed taking family members on excursions to various cities around the country. Joan had a unique love for her family and spoke fondly of her grandparents, parents, siblings, and other relatives. To be related to her was a treasure of great wealth. Joan had an unusual loyalty and support to family and tried to bring everyone together, if not in person, then by sharing their stories. She loved playing music, especially the classics, such as Mozart and Chopin and she would examine your hands to see if you had “piano fingers”.
Joan will be sorely missed, always loved and never forgotten.
She is preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Carrie B. Miller; siblings, Gladys, Harry, Norris, Doris, and Robert, and great-great-grandchild, Kayleigh Anderson.
