Catherine B. Winfrey was born October 15, 1934, in Wynne, Arkansas to the late Eddie Burnom and Mary Elizabeth Burnom-Smith. She was the third child born to this union.
Catherine received her formal education in the Arkansas Public School System and the Cleveland Public School System. She accepted Christ at an early age and attended C.M.E. Methodist Church in Wynne faithfully.
On October 31, 1954, Catherine united in Holy Matrimony with her childhood sweetheart, Roger Winfrey, and to this union six children were born, Gregory, Glen, Kathy, Rosalyn, Michael, and Roger.
Shortly after marriage, Catherine and Roger moved to Cleveland, Ohio with their young son Gregory in search of better opportunities. After working odd jobs, she found a position with Shaker Medical Center Hospital where she became an STNA. Her employment lasted with Shaker Medical Center until the hospital closed in 1982. Before long, she found employment with Sunny Acres long-term-care unit in the Cuyahoga County Hospital Systems where she worked faithfully until she retired to care for her husband whose illness sidelined him until his death in 1999.
Not long after starting her career with Shaker Medical Center Hospital, she met Frances Davenport who invited her and Roger to Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church where they became members in 1969 and remained faithful members till their death. Catherine was on the usher board and was always ready to give a helping hand when needed.
Catherine had a sweet personally and an infectious laugh that many will remember. She loved to dance, sing and just have fun with her family and friends. To know her was to love her! She was hilarious and truly missed her calling because she should have been a comedian!!
Her children and grandchildren were her life and there was nothing she wouldn’t do for them. She babysat for many on 143rd Street and others. She was affectionately known by her 143 Street family as Mrs. Winfrey, Ma, and Grandma.
She was a fabulous cook and showed her culinary skills mostly during the holidays. She loved to bake! You could always find many cakes and pies circling the living room with her children’s names on them. Gregory’s was a chocolate cake, Glen a lemon cake and Roger, his special pineapple upside down cake. Her specialty was German chocolate cakes which her daughters’ Kathy and Rosalyn loved. She always had them in the kitchen with her teaching them her craft. She loved taking care of her home, gardening and chatting with the neighbors.
When Catherine realized she could no longer live on her own, she went to live with her daughter Kathy. They enjoyed traveling, cooking together, going to casinos, movie night, and singing and dancing or just simply looking out the window. Kathy took excellent care of her until her peaceful transition to be with the Lord.
