Charles Clisby Hayes was born on Saturday April 1, 1939 in Birmingham, Alabama to the proud parents Sam and Gladys Hayes who relocated to Cleveland,Ohio. Charles graduated from East Technical High School in 1957. He went on to wed, which produced two wonderful children. His love for working on cars turned into a lifelong career. He retired from Hertz Commercial Trucks as Shop Manager. Sadly, he departed on March 15, 2022, leaving a legacy of love to his family and friends.
When you think of Charles Hayes, aka Motley, aka Charlie, you think of a friend. Someone who is always there when you need him. He lived a full life, making lifelong friends, drag racing at Thompson Speedway, playing in baseball leagues at Woodhill Park, bowling in tournaments, and drawing/sketching when the spirit hit him.
He had an easy way about him and a smile that warms your heart. He knew how to make you comfortable being around him. His family and friends knew whenever they needed something built, taken apart, put back together, or wired, he was the man. By all means he was no saint, Charles was also a ladies’ man, and he did not take fashion cues from anyone.
He is survived by his two children: Dion Hayes and Monique Hayes Goldsmith (deceased) (Candy Hayes mother). Grandchildren D’Asia Hayes, Deanna Hayes, and David Goldsmith. Siblings Gloria Mayes, Sam Hayes, Joan Hayes (deceased). Nieces and Nephews Wendy, Carl (deceased), Dianne, Yvonne, Debbie, Gregory, Samette, Silva, Tara and a great number of grandnieces, grandnephews, and friends.
Charles would like to let you know his work is done. He received a call, an offer he could not refuse, an appointment from which he will not be returning. This assignment comes with a huge sign-on bonus, a reunion with family and friends he has not seen in a long time.
His family thanks you from the bottom of their hearts for loving him.
