Christine was born Christine Manley in Clayton, Alabama to John and Amanda Manley. At an early age, the family moved and settled in Akron, Ohio, and became members of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. She was the second oldest of seven children and would often share stories of how she learned to cook, sew, and help look after her siblings. Christine also developed a love for books and reading. It was how she explored the world, learned of historical leaders, cultures, and the word of God with each page turned. She loved learning and eventually attended and graduated from South High School in 1957.
She met and married Buddy Esters. From their union came two girls, Kim, and Lori. For such a small in stature lady, her love and protection were like that of a Momma Bear. Any boy that came to visit her girls did not stand a chance! However, if they returned after such interrogations, she figured they were going to be ok. Her first question was always “What’s your preacher’s name? and Lord help them if they didn’t have a quick response. She became a mom figure to all, ready to share a word of advice, a listening ear, or encouragement.
Her career was all about numbers. She was an accountant for Monsanto Corporation and later retired at the age of 55. She found such joy in creating budgets and excel sheets whether you wanted one for your personal expenses or not. She was a true example of doing more with less because she kept a budget. Since she was able to retire at such an early age, she filled her time volunteering at a local hunger program, tending her garden, and spending time with her parents and siblings. Christine also continued her passion for learning and teaching and became a Sunday School teacher at Mt. Zion. She was so dedicated as a teacher and loved sharing her passion for the word of God. She would spend the week prior preparing and researching before each class.
As a grandmother, Christine was affectionately known as “Cammie”. She wanted to be called “Granny” but after many failed attempts trying to teach her first grandchild Maya to say, Granny, Maya would translate what she heard as Cammie. It was then that she became known as Cammie to everyone.
She was proceeded in death by her mother, Amanda Manley; father, John Manley; sister, Roxana Manley; brothers, Reginald, and Willie D. Manley.
She has left to morn her passing her daughters, Kimberly (Bradford) Turner and Lori Esters; sisters, Barbara Coleman, Margaret Townsend, and Scharlene (Lowell) Hawthorne; grandchildren, Maya Addison, Trenten Turner; grandpup Maxine; and a host of extended family and friends.
