Claudie (Claudia) Mae Manningham (Chatman), peacefully departed from this earthly realm on September 17, 2023 at the age of 80. Born on October 26, 1942 in the town of Gadsden, Alabama, Claudie’s life was a testament to community service through education, perseverance, kindness and faith.
Claudie was a beloved daughter born to Hollie Chatman (Woodward) and Cleveland Chatman. Preceding her in eternal rest, Claudie now joins her parents and sisters Gloria and Willie Ester, while her memory remains cherished by surviving brothers Jesse Nobles and Thomas Chatman. She also leaves behind a loving daughter, Erika Nickens, Son-In-Law, James Nickens, and their daughters, Kelsey, Makenna, and Cameron. She will be missed by a multitude of other family and friends.
After Graduating from Glenville High School in Cleveland, Ohio, a proud Tarblooder, she pursued her college degree in education at the Ohio University. She ultimately obtained her master’s degree in education. Educating our youth was indeed her passion. She set the example but also went above and beyond for her students, family, and friends. Along with the basics, she taught grade schoolers Black History, Black Pride, and a love of learning to give students a strong foundation for future success. Claudie dedicated over three decades of her life to the calling of teaching within the Cleveland Public School System.
In her free time Claudie loved to travel (she had an affinity for Las Vegas). She spent much of her adult life in multiple bowling leagues. The bowling community was a source of many lifelong friends with whom Claudie shared experiences and camaraderie.
In reverence for Claudia’s remarkable journey, the family humbly requests that in lieu of floral tributes, contributions be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Through this act of generosity, Claudie’s legacy of compassion and justice will continue to touch and improve the lives of others.
May Claudie’s spirit find eternal peace in the loving arms of our Lord. As we reflect upon her life, let us be inspired by her dedication, perseverance, and kindness. May her memory serve as a guiding light, reminding us to cherish the blessings that surround us and to live with compassion for others.
