Clementine Barrett, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, was born on January 1, 1935, in Birmingham, Alabama, to the union of Otis Golston, Sr. and Erma Jean Golston. Clementine peacefully departed this life and transitioned to her heavenly home on December 24, 2025, at the age of 90.
Affectionately known as “Tina” or “Teenie,” Clementine moved to Cleveland, Ohio, with her parents and siblings in 1946. She graduated from John Hay High School in 1952 at the age of 17. While pursuing life’s journey, she met and married Audrey Lee Barrett, who preceded her in death. From this loving union, they shared three children: Myron G. Barrett, Wendi R. Barrett-Stephens, and stepdaughter Iris Oliver. During their 24 years together, they enjoyed family vacations, gatherings with relatives and friends, numerous social activities, and spiritual growth.
Tina was raised in a Christian household and accepted Christ at an early age. She was a member of Shaker Heights Community Church and later attended East Mount Zion Baptist Church. She was an active member and devoted her time to various ministries in both churches.
She was employed by the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) for 35 years, where she was a dedicated and highly respected employee. Throughout her tenure, she received several promotions, management awards, and professional recognition. She retired as a highly respected senior administrator. Her career brought her years of professional experience, personal fulfillment, growth, and happiness.
A devoted, hands-on grandmother and great-grandmother, Tina was deeply involved in her grandchildren’s lives. She believed strongly that their time should never be idle and made it a priority to expose them to sports, culture, and the importance of civic duty. Many cherished memories were made at Thornton Park, where she supported her grandchildren as they learned to swim, ice skate, and skateboard. When not at the park, Tina could often be found at the public library with them, reading or participating in children’s activities.
Tina was the true epitome of motherhood. She was a mother figure to anyone blessed to be in her presence—always offering a meal, encouragement, and sound life advice. When she wasn’t being “Mom” or “Grandma,” she enjoyed socializing with family and friends, reading, shopping, traveling, listening to music, entertaining, participating in local political elections, watching political programs with her sister, and indulging in her favorite desserts of every kind. She often joked, “You all will know that I’m really sick if I don’t want anything sweet.”
Tina was a shining light in the lives of all who knew her. Her earthly journey was marked by love, compassion, generosity, and unwavering faith in God. She was always there when someone needed her—her greatest challenge being her inability to say “no.” Her passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of her family and friends.
Tina was preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Erma Jean Golston; her brothers, Otis Golston, Jr., Curtis Golston, Sr., and Theoplas (Sonny) Golston; sister, Mizella Bailey.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Myron Barrett and Wendi Barrett-Stephens (son-in-law Anthony Stephens); stepdaughter, Iris Oliver; sister, Betty T. Miller; grandchildren, Whitnei T. Shelven-Barrett, Shawn Jeffrey, Devin A. Stephens, and bonus granddaughter Erin Roznik-Rovinski; great-grandchildren, AnaBella Shelven-Barrett, Cruz Shelven-Barrett, Max Gibson, Julian Gibson, and Bryson Lee Jeffrey; along with a host of other loving relatives and friends.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:21
