Curtis Childress. Born on January 6, 1939, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Jack and Ida Childress, he was one of 13 children, growing up in a home filled with love, laughter, and the strong bonds of family.
Curtis was a man of great strength and determination, a trailblazer in his own right. He had a deep passion for bowling, a sport that brought him joy and, ultimately, recognition. He made history as the first Black bowler to win the ABC Bowling Tournament, breaking barriers and paving the way for others to follow. His dedication and love for the game were a testament to his perseverance and spirit.
But beyond his achievements, Curtis Childress will be remembered for the love he had for his family. He leaves behind three devoted sons—Curtis Jr., Gary, and Darrell—who carry his legacy forward. His loving sister, Charlotte Johnson, his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews will forever hold his memory in their hearts.
Though we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the life he lived—a life full of love, family, and accomplishment. His journey may have ended, but his spirit lives on in the lives of those he touched. As we say goodbye, let us remember Curtis with smiles, with gratitude, and with the same unwavering strength he carried throughout his life.
Rest in peace, Curtis. You will always be loved and never forgotten.
