Danny “Mooney” Pride, a dedicated Navy veteran, devoted family man,
and esteemed member of the United States Postal Service (USPS), has
passed away at the age of 72 on May 29, 2023. His departure from this
world leaves behind a void that will be deeply felt by all who knew
and loved him. He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and
Benzellar Pride; daughter, Marie Spence; and brother Darren Pride
Born on May 20, 1951, in Nashville, TN, Danny was raised with an
innate sense of duty and service. At the tender age of 18, he enlisted
in the United States Navy as a Boatswain’s Mate, proudly serving
aboard the USS Sylvania (AFS-2) and the USS Pictor (AF-54). For four
years, Danny’s service took him across the globe, allowing him to
experience the rich cultures of Greece, the Philippines, Japan, Spain,
Germany, and Italy.
After his honorable military service, Danny embarked on a new chapter
of his life, enrolling in college, getting married and joining the
United States Postal Service (USPS). Following his separation from the
military Danny enrolled in Cuyahoga Community College to pursue an
associate degree in business. He completed his degree in 1981, at
which time he met and later married Mary Ann Defreeze. To this union,
he became father to two boys, Philip and Ransford and had four
additional children, Danny, twins Amber and Aaron, and Marie.
Danny found great fulfillment in his role as a postal worker,
dedicating over three decades of his life to faithfully serving his
community. His unwavering dedication to his duties earned him the
utmost respect and admiration from both his colleagues and the
community at large. Recognizing the importance of collective strength,
Danny actively engaged with the Postal Union, becoming a passionate
advocate for the rights and welfare of his fellow employees.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Postal Union,
he was elected as the President of the American Postal Workers Union
(APWU). In this esteemed position, he fearlessly championed for fair
working conditions, equitable wages, and comprehensive benefits for
postal workers. His tireless efforts and determination played a
pivotal role in shaping the lives and careers of countless postal
workers throughout the region. Danny’s remarkable influence and
advocacy created a lasting impact, fostering an environment of
fairness, dignity, and respect within the postal community.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Danny selflessly donated his time to
his family and community. He took great pleasure in working alongside
his sons in their family business and served at the Soup Kitchen and
Food Pantry, where he dedicated himself to helping those in need.
Danny will forever be remembered for his kind heart, gentle demeanor,
and unwavering support for his loved ones.
He is survived by his children, Danny D Pride, Dr. Aaron N. Pride
(Brittany), Amber N. Thompkins (Aaron), Phillip Defreeze, and Ransford
Bailey (Anitra); his siblings, Darlene Pride, Spencer Pride, Linda
Graves, and Berness Pride; as well as his twelve beloved
grandchildren.
