David Oliver Dixon (affectionately called “Sugie”) was born, April 16, 1964 to the late Calvin Oliver Dixon and Aurelia LaGrande Dixon in Cleveland, Ohio. David was born prematurely and was very small. The doctors did not expect him to survive. They asked his parents if they wanted to name him. Calvin said, “The Lord is my shepherd, name him David” (Psalms 23).
David was educated in the Cleveland Public School System He attended Alexander Graham Bell School for the Deaf and graduated from South High School. He also attended Cuyahoga Community College.
David was employed with The Gund Arena for several years. He was later employed with National City Bank.
David kept God in his life and God shielded and protected him. With this, he was able to navigate through life with strength and confidence. As his brother Gregory said, “he knew the difference between right and wrong and he always chose right. He never met a stranger as good energy followed him; to know him was to love him.”as good energy followed him and to know him was to love him. delete
David furiously cherished his independence and loved life. He did not let his limitations be an obstacle on any level. On the contrary, his limitations became his anchor and he was resilient. He was extremely self-sufficient and when the family, at times, lovingly intervened with this independence, he did not hesitate to let them know their services were not needed.
David loved family and looked forward to family gatherings. At a time when most siblings lived out of state, he was so excited for every visit and family event. He took pleasure in spending time with his many nieces and nephews and loved them dearly. In addition, David was an avid sports fan, particularly basketball.
Throughout David’s life, he was very thoughtful and methodical regarding next steps. It was no different during the time when David experienced some health challenges and required home care; at this time, as well, he was decisive with his decisions–he was going to live with his brother, Gregory. While his lifestyle changed, his infectious smile did not change, his heart of gold did not change and his love for all did not change. He never complained.
Before the passing of his mother, she was so concerned about David’s care and safety. She implored us to look after David. We honored that request with love. While there are no words to describe how much he will be missed, we can take solace in knowing that he is at perfect peace.
David was preceded in death by his mother, Aurelia, whom he adored; his father, Calvin, whom he loved fondly and his sibling, Olivia, whose door was forever open to her little brother.
In addition, David leaves to mourn siblings, Coraneita Williams, Gregory Dixon(Margarita), Darlene Dixon, Cynthia Hood (Clarence), Wanda Dixon, Paul Dixon (Joyce) and Angela Woods (Douglas). David also leaves to mourn a host of family including aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
