DELLA HUNTER BROWN went home to be with the Lord, surrounded by family, on July 2, 2017. Della is survived by her husband of 42 years, Dr. Billy L. Brown.
Della is survived by her loving husband of 42 years Dr. Billy Brown, son Billy Brown and his wife Carrie Peterson-Brown and their children Brooklyn Della Brown and Lola Brown of Newport Beach, CA, daughters Dr. Danielle Brown of Baltimore, MD, and Heather Brown, Esq of Minneapolis, MN, and sisters Jeanita Brown of Raleigh, NC, Mary Ann Wright of Raleigh, NC, Maritza Hunter of Raleigh, NC, Debra Murphy of Raleigh, NC, Sitrenia Danzy of Petersburg, VA, Sharon Sleigh of New York, NY, and and a host of other loving friends and family.
Her light will continue to shine through the lives she touched on this Earth. She is now at peace with the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her mother Dorothy Hunter, father Early B. Leach, Sisters Patricia Hodge and Queen Whilemenia Eaddy, and Brothers Alonzo Hunter and Anthony Hunter.
Della Hunter Brown was born February 19th, 1947 to the late Dorothy “Tump” Hunter and Early B. Leach in Zebulon, North Carolina. She accepted Christ at an early age and attended Beaver Church. As a child, she was curious and intelligent. She always had a “good head on her shoulders.” She excelled in school and was in the top 10 of her graduating class at James E. Sheppard High school.
To pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse, she enrolled at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, North Carolina. She thrived academically and socially. She met lifelong friends, and was initiated into the Alphi Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with honors in 1969.
After graduation, she moved to Cleveland, Ohio to work at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. She worked tirelessly to serve those who had served our great country. She began her career as a staff nurse and worked hard to become a head nurse and a nursing supervisor. She retired after 42 years of service as a Public Health Nurse Coordinator. She loved serving veterans and was extremely proud of her work.
She met the love of her life Dr. Billy Brown in the fall of 1973 through mutual friends. Their love quickly blossomed, and they married in 1974. Their union was blessed with three children Danielle, Billy, and Heather. She was a dedicated wife and mother and the backbone of her family.
Della was also an active member of her community. She belonged to Windermere United Methodist Church in East Cleveland, Ohio. She worked diligently and faithfully for the Lord. She organized lavish Halloween parties for her community and donated toys and clothes to children in need.
Della loved to read and was an avid collector of coins and dolls. She loved talking about politics and current events. She had a giving and loving spirit, and she touched everyone she met. She loved life fiercely. Her vivacious laugh and impeccable fashion sense will be deeply missed.
