Delores Hayes was born on April 20, 1949, in St. George, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Melvin O.V. and Lollie Hayes. Delores joined Mt. Gillion Baptist Church under the late Freddy L Brown, where she became an active member, fostering a sense of community among her fellow congregants. She received her education from Cleveland Public Schools, and after graduating from John Hay High School, she attended Cuyahoga Community College, pursuing her passion for learning and personal growth.
Delores worked at Diamond Shamrock Perasol Corporation, and Appliance Parts Supply until she faced health challenges. Throughout her career, she was known for her strong work ethic and her ability to bring a smile to her coworkers’ faces. In 1970, Delores married the late Elijah Mitchell Jr., and to their union, they had three beautiful daughters: Monica, Jennifer, and Nicole Mitchell. Delores took great pride in being a mother, always encouraging her daughters to pursue their dreams and instilling in them the values of hard work and integrity.
Delores enjoyed cooking, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends. She was famous for her delicious home-cooked meals, often hosting family gatherings where everyone would come together to share stories and laughter. Her love for travel allowed her to create unforgettable memories with her family. During her time of sickness, she did not complain; her strength and positivity were an inspiration to all who knew her. Everyone she encountered truly enjoyed being around her, drawn in by her warm smile and caring nature.
Delores departed this life on April 14, 2025, at Cleveland Clinic Hospital, surrounded by her family. She was a beacon of love and joy, known for her unwavering spirit and kind heart. Throughout her life, Delores touched the hearts of many with her warmth and compassion, leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness. She was preceded in death by her great-grandson Amiri Brou and her longtime companion John F. Wright.
Delores leaves to cherish her loving memory daughters Monica Mitchell, Jennifer Mitchell, and Nicole Mitchell; Bonus daughter and son Jennifer Merritt (Demetrius) and Hiram Wright; Sisters Brenda Harris and Terrell Martino; Brothers Terrance (Anne), Ronald, Donald (Sharon), Tony, and Troy Martino; Grandchildren, Briauna Mitchell, Joshua Knox, Delourn Mitchell, David Mitchell, and Tufani Douglas; Extended granddaughters Markeesha Lowe and Asia Wright; Great-grandchildren, Langston and Jolee Knox and Adjoua Brou; Sister-in-law Sharon Jones (Rodney);
aunts Betty Hayes Bey and Fannie B. Kearney. Godchildren Luda A. Hayes, Lenora and George Lockett, and Gerald Ford; and Spiritual daughter Cathy Needom. Her family and friends will carry her memory in their hearts forever, celebrating the life of a remarkable woman who brought so much joy to those around her.
Delores leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and resilience. Delores will be deeply missed by her family and friends, but her spirit will live in the memories they hold dear.
