Dolores P. Harmon Hodges fell asleep in death on Monday, December 12, 2016 at St. James Hospital, Chicago Heights, IL. Her son, Conley was by her side. Dolores is survived by her children, Thomas III of Chicago, IL, Bryant Sr. (Elaine) of Concord, OH, Conley Sr. (Cathy) of Flossmoor, IL, Garrick (Maureen) of Sylvania, OH and Warren of Seven Hills, OH; grandchildren, Michael Bloom (Ann), Bryant Johnson Jr. (Jean), Abraham Johnson, La Tosha Johnson, Matthew Johnson, Conley Johnson Jr., Michael Johnson (Nicole), Keisha Johnson and 13 great grandchildren.
Dolores, age 88, was born in Akron, Ohio on April 30, 1928 to Nimrod and Olivia Harmon (both deceased). She was the first in line of three children. Her siblings, Nimrod Jr. and Levine C. Waller both preceded her in death.
In 1949, Dolores said she met and fell in love with a most romantic and handsome man, Thomas Johnson Jr. (deceased). After courtship, they were married on January 7, 1950. The marriage produced five handsome sons, Thomas III, Bryant Sr., Conley Sr., Garrick and Warren.
Dolores loved children and while her kids were young, she worked as a playground teacher at the Cleveland City Projects. Dolores assisted the kids, organized activities, distributed lunches and provided comfort for those in need.
Dolores graduated from Glenville High School in June 1947. After graduating she attended Kent State University and Governor State University in Chicago, IL, where she received her degree in Early Childhood Education and Nursing.
Dolores traveled throughout the United States and traveled to Israel. While living in Chicago, Dolores was baptized and became an active member of the Chicago, Hts. Seventh Day Adventist Church. She also attended Trinity Church in Crete, IL where she served as Church Mother. Members of both churches and her community have wonderful memories of her.
Family was important to Dolores and she never passed up an opportunity to attend family reunions or visits with relatives. It was during these gatherings that she encouraged her family members to reach out and be the best person possible. Dolores was devoted to her mother, acting as caregiver to Olivia in her golden years. She was most pleased when her five boys were together laughing, joking and playing bid whist.
No doubt you have some fond memories of her. May you hold those memories close to your heart.
