Donald Lee Rice, born on August 10, 1939, to Robert Lee Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Rice, peacefully departed this life on October 20, 2025. A proud veteran, Donald served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1960 to 1963, embodying the values of courage and commitment that defined his character.
Raised in Cleveland, Donald was educated in the public school system, where he laid the foundation for a life filled with learning and growth. His early years were marked by a profound spiritual awakening at the Open-Door Missionary Baptist Church, where he encountered the living God, a relationship that would guide him throughout his life.
In 1968, Donald found love and companionship in Idell (Love) Morgan, whom he cherished deeply. Together, they built a family, and Donald took great pride in being a devoted father to his son, Leroy Thompson. His love extended to his two granddaughters, Norquetta and Ebony Thompson, and his great-grandson, James Rogers, who brought him immense joy.
Donald was a man of many passions. He found solace in the great outdoors, particularly through fishing. Whether it was basketball, football, or baseball, if it was on television, you could be sure Donald was watching, cheering for his favorite teams. He also enjoyed the thrill of playing cards and visiting the casino with his siblings, where laughter and camaraderie filled the air.
Family was the cornerstone of Donald’s life. He was known for his warm spirit and infectious laughter, often lighting up family gatherings with his playful banter. “SHOOT THE SHIT”. His presence will be profoundly missed, but his legacy of love and devotion will continue to resonate within the hearts of those who knew him.
Donald is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Robert Lee Rice and Mary Elizabeth Rice, and his three brothers, Clarence Rice, Robert Rice Jr., and Michael Rice. He leaves behind a loving family, including his son Leroy, his granddaughters Norquetta and Ebony, his great-grandson James, and his cherished sisters Geraldine Banks, Mary Alexander, Madeline Griffin, and Jeanette Jones, along with a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends who will forever hold his memory dear.
Though Donald’s physical presence is no longer with us, his spirit now rests in the arms of his Lord and Savior, where he will continue to watch over his loved ones. As we celebrate his life, we remember a man who embodied love, laughter, and unwavering faith. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
