Doris Marbley- Black was born on September 16, 1929, in Anniston, Alabama to Mitchell Griggs and Willa B. Parker. Doris grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and attended Cleveland Public Schools. She later studied at Case Western Reserve and Cleveland State and obtained her bachelor’s in electrical engineering.
Doris grew up in Lane Metropolitan Church and later became a longtime member of Church of The Savior under tutelage of Dr. Charlie Yoost. She worked at General Electric at Nela Park for 42 years. She worked with Urving Franklin Real Estate company in Cleveland Heights. She also catered at Shaker Heights Country Club with her father. In her later years, she went back to school and obtained her certificate and became a certified S.T.N.A.
In 1949, Doris married Leon Marbley and together they had five children: Lewis, Gloria (Cookie), Valerie, Crystal, and Mischa. She was a junior assistant golf instructor at Shawnee Golf Course. She loved to travel, read books, and complete crossword puzzles. She was a great cook, she was known for her sweet potato pies, peach cobblers, and pound cakes.
On August 27th of 2024, Doris passed away at age 94 years old. Doris leaves to cherish her memory: daughters; Gloria (John), Valerie, Crystal (Lorenzo), and Mischa (Tony). Grandchildren; Christopher, Corwin (Corky), Michelle, Jamaal, Karmann, Leah, Rodney (JR), Jeffrey (TAE), and Giovanni. Eleven great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild. Sisters; Jean Pinkney, Elaine Whitlow, and Diane Swann. And a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Doris is proceeded in death by parents Mitchell and Willa Griggs, siblings Connie, Joan, and Donald. Her son, Lewis and late husband, Leon Marbley.
