Dorothy Jean Pace (affectionately known as “Dot”) was born to the late Willie Lee and Clara Austin on November 30, 1948, in Clarksdale, Mississippi. She was the only child from this union and was cared for by a large extended family that included her grandmother, Mable Eterie Glenn.
Dorothy chose Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and then later rededicated herself at Christ the King Catholic Church. In her early years she relocated with her mother to Cleveland, Ohio. Dorothy was educated in the East Cleveland Public schools, remained a lifelong resident of the city and has maintained enduring friendships with several she met during this time. While in high school she met and soon married the love of her life Robert Pace. To this union of over 55 years was born two children, Sherry Teresa and Robert Eric. Dorothy reveled in her children and her family life, and she surrounded them all with her love and continuous support.
An artist at heart, Dorothy attended the Cleveland School of Art (now the Cleveland Institute of Art) where she honed her artistic aspirations in a variety of expressions that led to her cultivating a beautiful home that welcomed many and a classic sense of style including her signature broaches. Dorothy started her work career at Sonitrol Security in the 1970’s and was tapped as one of few women leaders in the organization. She later joined the Cleveland Plain Dealer where she worked tirelessly (even receiving recognition for perfect attendance) for over 20 years until her retirement in 2014.
Her life was filled with the love and joy of the Lord, her family and friends. God richly blessed her to be a blessing to all those she encountered. Her kindness, generosity and open arms were extended graciously whether it was via a listening ear, a generous plate, a place to stay, babysitting services or being showered with gifts of her beloved Avon products. Dorothy was loved by many, and the non-gambler loved the lights and shows of Las Vegas and enjoyed the cultures of many new cities and countries through her travels.
On Sunday, September 8, 2024 Dorothy departed us surrounded by love and gained her angel wings to be with the Lord and the family who preceded her in death including her adored parents, many aunts, uncles and cousins. She leaves to mourn and forever cherish her memory, her beloved husband, Robert Pace, devoted children, daughter, Sherry & son, Robert Eric; her favored Aunt, Martha Jones of Chicago, Illinois and a host of cousins, family and treasured close friends who became the family she chose.
