Earl L. Britton, 91, of Beachwood, Ohio, entered into God’s kingdom on July 8, 2023. He was born on August 30, 1931, to Conwall and Mary Robinson Britton.
Earl, a loving and devoted husband, and father, is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sarah, of Beachwood; son, Derrick (Stephanie) of Powder Springs, Georgia; and sister, Annie Austin of Greenville, Mississippi. He also leaves to cherish his memories four nieces: Sherry Gibbs, Doris Rice, Brenda Taylor of the Cleveland area, and Michelle D. Jones of Mesquite, Texas; five nephews: Curtis Britton, Kenneth Britton, Ronald Britton of Cleveland, Victor Austin of Greenville, and Michael Britton of Dallas, Texas; centenarian cousin Inez ‘BC’ Thompson of Cleveland; several grand nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Earl was predeceased by his parents, Conwall and Mary; brothers Conwall ‘CW’ and Floyd; sisters Mary and Myrtle; and stepson Anthony.
Earl was born in Glen Allan, Mississippi but spent his formative years in Greenville, Mississippi. He enjoyed sports, particularly football, which he played as a student at Alcorn Agricultural & Mechanical College (now Alcorn State University). He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in industrial arts. He was then drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served two years stationed in Germany as a military policeman.
After his military service, Earl was offered a teaching position in Greenville. Before accepting the offer, he went to visit his siblings, CW, Floyd, and Mary who were all living in the Cleveland, Ohio area. He was persuaded to stay in Cleveland and take a position with Republic Steel. Earl also became active with the Alcorn State Alumni Association, which is where he met his lovely wife, Sarah. After a year of dating, they were married and soon had son, Derrick. They moved to Beachwood and Earl remained at Republic Steel, later known as LTV Steel, for 32 years, rising through the ranks to become a supervisor. In his free time, he enjoyed playing golf, supporting Derrick in his many activities, and always making time for trips home to visit family and friends in Greenville.
After his retirement, Earl devoted his time to service at his church home, Aldersgate United Methodist Church, and playing golf with his many friends. He also enjoyed watching all the Cleveland sports teams, especially the Browns, Cavaliers, and the Indians (now Guardians).
As a devoted family man, Earl focused on providing his wife and son with the best life possible without worrying about himself. He believed that it was important, above all, to be of good character. He encouraged others to do what’s right and work hard for what you want, not letting anyone discourage you from your goals.
Earl was a truly great man whose impact will be forever felt by his family, that loved him dearly. He was a selfless man whose passing left an unfillable gap in the hearts of his loved ones. His ability to sacrifice, provide, support, forgive, and love will be forever engrained in all he knew.
He leaves to cherish his memories his sister, Annie Austin of Greeneville, MS; four nieces: Sherry Gibbs, Doris Rice, Brenda Taylor all of Cleveland, OH area; Michelle D. Jones of Mesquite, TX; five nephews: Curtis Britton, Kenneth Britton, Ronald Britton of Cleveland, OH; Victor Austin of Greenvile, MS; Michael Britton of Dallas, TX; cousin centenarian Inez Thompson Cleveland, several grand nieces and nephews along with a host of other relatives and friends.
