Edith Mae Barnes Johnson, 92, of Cleveland, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, December 11th in the comfort of her home. She was born on July 26, 1933, in Forrest City, Arkansas to Tolley and Indie Barnes.
Edith was known for her kindness, strength, warmth, faith, humor, and for the deep love she carried for her family. She loved in her own steady, thoughtful way. You could feel her love more than you could hear it. She devoted her life to raising her family, caring for others, creating a welcoming home, and being a devoted worker — always placing the needs of those she loved before her own.
Edith earned a Bachelor of Science degree in General Home Economics in 1955 from Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial State University. She worked as a hospital dietician and supervisor before retiring after nearly 30 years of service as a Cleveland Public School teacher.
Edith married Joseph W. Johnson II in 1965, and together they shared 21 years of love and partnership, building a life rooted in family and shared memories until his passing.
Edith is survived by her beloved child, Joseph W. Johnson III, and her two cherished grandchildren, Erin Bennett Johnson Lee and Khaly Sarr-Johnson, among many other nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who were blessed to have known her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, and two children, Edwin Bennett Johnson and Bonnita J. Johnson.
Edith will be remembered most for her quiet strength, wisdom, her laugh, her storytelling, and her love. Her legacy lives on through the family she raised, the values she instilled, and the love she gave so freely.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to extended family, lifelong friends, her care team, and our community for their compassion and support during this time.
