Edith Virginia Green Counts was born March 26, 1941, to the union of Nancy Coleman and David Green in Orlando, FL. At an early age, Edith moved to Akron, OH with her father and stepmother, Alice Mack, whom she affectionately called “Mom.” Edith remained a lifelong resident of Akron and attended Akron Public Schools and graduated from South High School class of 1961.
In 1963, she became a single parent to Stephanie Lynn, thereafter, she became a Home Child Care entrepreneur providing childcare throughout the city for more than fifty years. She loved children and desired to have more. In 1978, her love for more children became a reality through DeWain LeMar. Both children have grown to bless their mother for the fruit of her love to them. Stephanie as a wife, mother, education assistant, and an ordained minister; and DeWain as a husband, father, retired Army Staff Sergeant, and Resource Entrepreneur.
At an early age, she confessed her faith in Christ and zeal for ministry at Phillips Chapel CME Church. Her commitment to Christ was nurtured and strengthened through her involvement in countless ministries such as AGLOW Fellowship, children’s ministry, choir, church school, “FLAME,” Women’s Fellowship, and Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, she launched a monthly Prayer Breakfast, which continued for several years. She served wholeheartedly, as unto the Lord, and not people, Ephesians 6:7, sharing the Word of God.
Edith advanced her biblical studies at The Mountain of the Lord Fellowship and Ministry Training Institute (MTI). Consequently, she was ordained as a Deaconess at the Mountain of the Lord Fellowship. She was a servant, who studied to show herself approved unto God, a workman who needs not to be ashamed; rightly dividing the word of truth, 2 Timothy 2:15.
Later in life, she met and married Mondel Counts. Together, they served the Lord in church ministry as they prayed and lead many to Christ. They enjoyed traveling and hosting friends and family gatherings. After the passing of her companion, she continued to travel to places such as The Holy Land, Italy, Puerto Rico, and several states. Her hobbies entailed cooking, crocheting, knitting, and she enjoyed spending time with her beloved cousins Charles and Deloris Greene. She was best known for her homemade ice cream, lasagna, sour cream pound cake, and Edith’s cornbread.
She was actively involved in community activities representing the “difference of the power of one person, the Foster Grandparent Program, The Young at Heart Senior Group, and Akron Blind Center. A servant is called to be faithful unto death, Rev. 2:10.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mondel Counts; parents, David, Nancy, and Alice; siblings, Clarence Campbell, Marie McAlpine, and Margret Green.
She leaves to cherish her memory daughter, Stephanie (Michael) Davis of Akron, OH; son, DeWain (Maria) Green of North Carolina; grandchildren, Aja, DeWain, Jr. and Brian Green, Michael, and Nathaniel Davis; sisters, Janice (Wilbert) Owens of Akron, OH and Sharon Brooks of Baltimore Maryland. Edith’s legacy of faithful devotion to prayer and servant leadership is survived by a host of spiritual sons, daughters, brothers, and sisters. The treasure chest of her work on earth is now finished, but the jewels deposited will continue to shine through the lives of the many she touched and who will sincerely miss her.
