Edith Virginia Phillips, 98 of Cleveland, Ohio, was born July 2, 1924, to the late James and Lavinia Washington in Hume, Virginia.
Edith was the 10th child of eleven children. She was preceded in death by ten siblings: Harvey Washington, Minnie Dunn, Hilton Washington, Lorunzel Washington, James Edward Washington, Moffett Washington, Viola Coleman, Manuel Washington, Sr., Ethel Baltimore, and Audrey Kenner.
Edith moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1945 with her sister Minnie. Edith was a faithful member of Calvary Presbyterian Church and was baptized in 1963.
Edith worked at the Union Club for 40 years and retired in the early 90’s. She also worked at Paul Revere Elementary School as a Lunch Aid until 2013.
Edith enjoyed doing hair, working on crossword puzzles, reading The Cleveland Plain Dealer, The Cleveland Press, The Calling Post newspaper and Jet and Ebony Magazines. Her favorite TV shows were Family Feud with Steve Harvey, Judge Mathis, and Judge Judy.
Edith loved going on walks, she enjoyed being outside in the yard and sitting on her porch talking with her neighbors. Edith loved to clean and always kept a clean house.
Edith also loved dancing in her living room listening to her 45 records (LP) of Aretha Franklin, The Four Tops, Ray Charles, and Jackie Wilson.
Edith was an amazing cook, but she also enjoyed going out to eat. Her favorite restaurants were, Red Lobster, Popeye’s Chicken, and Bob Evans. She loved attending family gatherings and was most famous for making the turkey, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, and potato salad.
On April 30, 2023, Edith completed her journey and passed away peacefully with her loved ones by her side. She is survived by her daughter, Julianne; son, Bernard; two granddaughters, Toni (D. Henderson) and Jacquees; three great-grandchildren Dejà, Damir and Vaughn and a host of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and other relatives.
