Edward Ernest Jefferson, 98, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home on Jan. 17, 2022, after a short illness. Edward, or Eddie to his loved ones, was born on May 10, 1923, in Chattanooga, Tenn., to William and Ella (nee Suttles) Jefferson. When he was a teenager, Eddie’s family moved to Johnstown, Pa., where he attended Johnstown Catholic High School (now Bishop McCort High School). At the age of 20, Eddie enlisted into the United States Marine Corps., making history as one of the country’s first Black marine recruits, collectively known as the Montford Point Marines. As a Private First Class, Eddie served in the Marshall Islands in the Asiatic Pacific area during World War II. He was honorably discharged in December 1945.
Eddie returned to Johnstown where he met the love of his life, Evelyn (nee Smith), right before she moved to Cleveland. He followed his heart – and her – and the two were married for nearly 70 years. Eddie delivered furniture for Katz and Rothstein Furniture store, before becoming a salesman for National Furniture, Kronheim’s and Higbee’s department stores, where he worked until retirement. In 2012, Eddie was recognized for his military service in World War II and awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the United States Congress’s highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions by individuals or institutions.
Eddie enjoyed working in his yard and attending sports events and concerts – he loved Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles and Peggy Lee, just to name a few. Above all, Eddie loved his family. His favorite pastimes were family game nights (especially “Aggravation”) and spending numerous Sundays at Cleveland Stadium, cheering for the Browns with Evelyn and sons Steve and Mark. He also was an animal lover, as the family had numerous dogs throughout the years.
Left to cherish his precious memory are wife, Evelyn; sons, Steve and Mark (April); grandchildren, DeShandra Motley, Lisa Jefferson, Ondrea Jefferson, Chanté Jefferson Jones (Doston) and Alexandria Kailer (Justin); great-grandchildren, Alexa and Amanda Jones, and Jesse Kailer; special niece, Marti Thompson; former daughter-in-law, Carmelene Jefferson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Preceding Eddie in death are sons Gregory Stewart and Penny Jefferson.
The family would like to thank the VA Hospital in Cleveland and Hospice Visiting Nurse Service for their support and care. Condolences may be sent to 3314 E. 134 St., Cleveland, OH., 44120.
