Edward Philpot, affectionately known as “Philpot,” was born on August 4, 1933, in LaGrange, Georgia, to the late Allen and Beatrice Philpot, and peacefully passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 93. He was the fifth of nine children: John Allen, Nathaniel, Thelma Jean, Grace, Joe, Arthur Lee, Mack L., and Cassandra. Growing up with so many siblings, Philpot understood the importance of family early on, and at age 11, he and his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he grew up to build his life and establish his legacy.

Philpot attended Cleveland Public Schools and possessed and developed many talents and interests at an early age. He loved drawing, singing, and took to many sports, although baseball was his favorite. Philpot had a “hard throwing left-handed pitch,” that could intimidate any batter up at the plate and even attracted the attention of the Cleveland Buckeyes. During his youth in Cleveland, he met the love of his life, Catherine “Cat” Sims, after being introduced to her by his baseball teammate, friend, and future brother-in-law, Joe Sims. Their love story began young, and they were married on March 24, 1955. Together, the two built a loving home and raised six children.

Family was at the center of Philpot’s life. He cherished quality time together, whether sharing meals, taking leisurely drives, playing cards, visiting amusement parks, or simply enjoying one another’s company. He loved Cat’s cooking, rarely turned down a sweet treat, and took pride in teaching his children important life skills like learning to swim. Through hard work, dedication, and quiet strength, he led by example and showed his family what love and sacrifice looked like. Philpot understood the value of hard work and always provided for his family. After working various jobs, he built a respectable 32-year long career with General Motors, where he worked as a line worker until retiring in 1999.

Retirement gave Philpot more time to spend with those he cherished and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. He loved watching old westerns and sports from the comfort of his favorite recliner. He enjoyed fixing up his old car, gardening, caring for his lawn, and spending time with family and friends. As an avid storyteller, Philpot shared memories, lessons, and words of wisdom with anyone willing to listen. He was known for his sharp mind, great sense of humor, strong convictions, impeccable style, and deep love of music. You could often hear him humming a hymn or singing a favorite song around the house.

Philpot accepted and knew Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was a faithful Christian and served as a deacon for First Baptist Church of South Euclid and before that, Second Metropolitan Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio. Philpot’s faith guided his life and was reflected by the kindness, generosity, and compassion he showed to others.

With deep love, gratitude, and fond memories, we celebrate the life of Edward Philpot. Philpot was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Catherine Philpot; daughter, Mona Rae Philpot; grandson, Aaron B. Mitchell; his parents; and seven of his siblings. He is survived by his loving sister, Grace Tyner; his children, Connie L. Mitchell (Edward Mitchell, deceased), Edward A. Philpot (Zelma), Kathy L. Philpot, Gloria E. Spencer (Scott), and Doris A. Philpot; eight grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.
