Edwin Vines was born on August 5, 1944, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Alfearis Robinson and Velma Smith (Josepheus Smith). He spent his early childhood in Birmingham and Boston, Massachusetts, before moving with his mother to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1953.
As a child, Edwin was rambunctious, curious, and industrious. He loved comic books, enjoyed working his own paper route, and took pride in earning his own money. He also worked as a lifeguard at the YMCA, sparking a lifelong love for swimming and diving, for which he won numerous awards.
At age 16, he purchased his first motorbike, igniting a passion for motorcycles that continued throughout his life and was eventually passed down to his daughter.
His adventurous spirit carried him beyond land—first to the sea, where he learned to sail and owned his own sailboat, and later to the skies, where he trained as a pilot and flew his own ultralight aircraft.
Edwin had many interests. He enjoyed fitness and bodybuilding, eventually building his own home gym. He loved tennis, football, music, and movies. A creative soul, he was deeply drawn to photography and videography, often documenting family milestones and gatherings. Edwin was also a man of faith, practicing as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and devoting time to studying the Word.
He graduated from East High School, took courses at Tri-C, and believed strongly in lifelong learning. During the Vietnam War, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Guam. While on leave, he traveled to the Philippines, where he met the love of his life, Lydia. After navigating the journey to bring her to the United States, they were married and shared 56 years together.
Edwin worked in several industries, including Republic Steel, before retiring from Sears Paint and Hardware. In the 1970s, he and Lydia settled in Maple Heights, Ohio, where they raised their two children and created a home filled with joy, family, and countless gatherings. Their home later became a place of cherished memories with grandchildren, whom Edwin affectionately called his “best friends.” Even as his mobility declined, he remained playful, loving, and deeply connected to his family.
In his later years, Edwin faced health challenges with resilience and determination. Though in and out of hospitals and rehabilitation facilities, he continued to fight with strength. Eventually diagnosed with cancer, Edwin wished to spend his final days at home, surrounded by love. On Monday, August 25, 2025, Edwin departed this life peacefully, with the love of his life, his daughter/”Twin” by his side.
Edwin leaves behind a legacy of adventure, authenticity, and generosity. He was frugal by nature, yet endlessly giving—devoting his time, energy, and resources to others. His love, faith, and care for people touched all who knew him, making the world a better place.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Comfort Keepers Home Health caregivers—Josie, Gaziele, and Continuum Care Hospice nurse Tammy—who made it possible for Edwin to remain at home. Special thanks are also given to extended family, friends, and his community of Jehovah’s Witnesses for their prayers, visits, and steadfast love.
Edwin was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings (Cheryl Vines, Darlene Smith, Jackie Welch, Alphearis Robinson, Wilfred Robinson , Angela Robinson), and his beloved in-laws (Sylvester and Leonida). He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Lydia Vines; his cherished daughter and twin, Lydvette (James) Evans; and his namesake son, Edwin Pierre (Jasimine) Vines. He also leaves behind three granddaughters—Simara (Paul), Alana, and Serenity—whom he lovingly called his best friends.
Coming from a large family, Edwin is also survived by brothers Dewayne (Ann) Smith and Kevin (Diane) Robinson, Donnell Robinson along with a host of dear brothers- and sisters-in-law, extended family, and friends who will treasure his memory.
