“Welcome to Family Dollar…”, as Ms. Elizabeth Betty Jean Weems, affectionately known as Ms. Liz, would say. She was born February 28, 1946, in Abbeville, Alabama and went home to be with our Father on December 10, 2021. Elizabeth has been an Akron resident since the age of 19, settling here from New Jersey. She raised all of her children in Akron and was a member of many churches and organizations. Liz was a very hard-working woman who reverenced God no matter the situation nor outcome. As she would always say, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” as that was also her motto for the way she lived her life. Liz was full of unconditional love.
Elizabeth loved gathering with family and close friends while enjoying great food, having conversations about “The Good Ol’ Days.” She was a woman of great humor, so there was never a dull moment. She loved watching sports, especially basketball – which she was quite good at herself. Liz had many talents, such as: running fast, karate and singing. Elizabeth was such a people’s person, even when she got sick, she continued to work although she didn’t have to. She was adamant about reminding people about God’s goodness. She was too kind for some of this generation to understand!
Liz was surely a woman of God who will be missed dearly by all who got to know and love her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rufus Weens and Minnie Sowell-Weems; brothers, Bobby-Ray of Alabama, and Joe of Cleveland; sisters, Ann of Cleveland, Etheal and Elaine of Alabama; daughter, Kathryn Hatcher.
Elizabeth is survived by her children, Deborah (James) Riley, Gloria Hatcher, Richard “Wayne” (Angela) Hatcher, Brenda Wilson-Hatcher and Scorm (Caress-Jones) Hatcher; sisters, Gloria of North Carolina and Margnet of New Jersey; 30 special grandchildren; 67 great & great-great grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
