Emily Irene Sewell was born on January 27, 1917, in Cedartown, Georgia to Rosa and Andrew Whatley. She later moved to Akron, Ohio, where she met and married Jesse Sewell.
She was a long-time member of the Antioch Baptist Church and later a member of the New Hope Baptist Church, where she served on the Usher Board and later on the Mother’s Board. Emily knew well the meaning of faith, service, and commitment; always available to help with many church events and activities, serving the sick, and shut-ins.
Emily was a retired employee of the City of Akron and kept very active during her retirement with family, travel, gardening, bible study, sewing, and as a member of several clubs, including the Georgia Peach Club, the Dover Avenue Block Club, and the Cousins Club.
Emily was a very stylish woman and would never disappoint on Sunday mornings tailored in the latest fashions and hats – many of her own designs as she was also an accomplished seamstress performing alterations and clothing for many happy fashionistas in the Akron area.
Emily went home to be with the Lord after celebrating 105 wonderful years of life. Emily’s centurion status has gained recognition from the Mayor of Akron, President Obama, and President Biden. She passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, December 17, 2022. Emily’s life would seem long to many, but to those of us who were touched by her love, 105 years was not nearly long enough. Her final days were spent surrounded by family whom she loved dearly and who adored her. She will be sorely missed by her sister, Mary of 92 years, who tirelessly cared for her these last few years. Their love and inseparable bond will forever be engraved in their hearts and the hearts of their family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rosa and Andrew Whatley; husband, Jesse Sewell; brother-in-law, Willie Mitchell; and 11 brothers and sisters, Andrew Lee (Angie), Magnolia, Mariah, Hulda Mae, Cora Lee, Violet, Amos, Albert, A.C., Augusta, and Arthur.
She is survived by her loving sister, Mary Mitchell; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews who all had bragging rights for having an aunt who was a centurion and a host of dear relatives and friends.
Aunt Emily, this is not goodbye, as we know we will one day see you again. Matt. 25:23 – Well done, thy good and faithful servant.
