On February 19, 1927, in Union, Mississippi, a beautiful life began. Ernestine Welch Baker, the eldest daughter of five children born to John D. and Ludie Welch, grew up surrounded by love and faith.
At 19, she moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where she began raising her family and lovingly cared for her younger sisters, Barbara and Helen. With grace and strength, she became a pillar of support for those around her.
Mother Baker was a woman of purpose and conviction. She served her community as a political advocate in Ward 12, promoting civic engagement and the importance of voting. Known for her vibrant spirit, she enjoyed music by Bobby “Blue” Bland, played Bid Whist with competitive flair, and delighted family and friends with her homemaking talents—especially her famous Red Velvet Cake. She was stylish, proud, and a dreamer who instilled in her children the values of education and perseverance.
Her spiritual journey began early when she accepted Jesus Christ at Spring Hill Baptist Church in Mississippi. In 1975, she united with Starlight Baptist Church under Pastor Edward Small, where her faith became the cornerstone of her life. She served faithfully on the Mother’s Board, Pastor’s Aide, and other committees, and was devoted to Christian education. One of her favorite hymns, “Walk with Me, Lord,” reflected her lifelong desire to walk closely with the Lord.
Mother Baker’s life was a testament to strength, love, and faith—a legacy that will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She departed this life on November 14, 2025, at the age of 98.
She leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Barbara Welch Hunter (Reno, Nevada); five children—Arthur Baker Jr. (Marilyn), Diane Sterling (Joseph), Carolyn Burrus, George Baker (Annette) of Tennessee, and Fatima Wright; six grandchildren—John, Tracy, Toni, Jason, Lajuana, and Ronald; along with a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors, and her loving church family.
Her laughter, wisdom, and unwavering faith touched every life she encountered. Though her earthly journey has ended, her love and legacy will live forever in our hearts. We celebrate her life with gratitude and honor her memory with joy, knowing she now walks with the Lord.
“Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord.”
Matthew 25:23
