Ernestine was born on August 6, 1944 in Canton, Ohio to her parents Edward & Ada Taylor, who were the Deacon & Deaconess of Shiloh Baptist Church in Canton. She was the third child of four, and the second daughter. Her nickname was Nunie, given to her by her father when she was an infant. As she got older, her family and friends called her Ernie. Even as a child Ernestine knew she wanted to be a teacher. Her idea of playing was pretending to be at school being the teacher while the other children were the students.
Ernestine graduated from Kent State University in 1968 with a Master of Education. After two years of teaching in Ohio, she moved to California in June 1970 to get away from the cold and to be with her older sister, Dorothy. She met her future husband, Baldwin “Bunny” Fisher, through her sister that same summer. They were married three years later in July 1973. The couple was blessed with three children over the next 14 years. She began teaching in Los Angeles in August, 1970. After 13 years of teaching in Los Angeles, Ernestine took a position at Danube Ave Elementary in Granada Hills teaching 2nd and 3rd grades in 1983.
An avid churchgoer since childhood, Ernestine found Lake View Terrace Baptist Church in the early 1990s. She participated in many church functions including teaching Vacation Bible School during the summer. She became a Sunday School teacher, then Assistant Superintendent, followed by Superintendent of the Sunday School department. Her favorite bible verse was Psalms 119:105; “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
In 2001, Ernestine got a divorce, then retired from teaching in 2006 after 38 years at the age of 62. She had been at Danube Ave Elementary for 23 years.
A constant professional teacher, Ernestine may have seemed quiet and reserved but for those of us who knew her, she was quick to crack a joke and have those around her laughing. She loved all things beautiful like flowers, especially yellow roses. She loved to sing songs of all types from gospel in the church choir at Shiloh to Motown classics. Ernestine could also play the piano and organ.
In December 2014, Ernestine was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. Ernestine is survived by her three children: Baldwin “Art” Fisher Jr., Cheryl Fisher, and Michelle Fisher; three grandchildren: Brianna, Bryson, and Alexander Fisher; her older brother, Edward Nelson Taylor II; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Ernestine Taylor Fisher was called home on July 31st, 2023.
