Ethel Mae (Gibson-King) Coleman was born June 7, 1929, in Holly Hill, F. The 8th of 9 children born to the late David Louis Gibson and Ethel Mae (Hooks) Gibson.
Ethel graduated from Akron Evening High school on May 14, 1970. She was employed at Polsky’s Department Store. After leaving Polsky’s she was employed at Akron City (Summa) Hospital working in the cafeteria as a server and then cashier, retiring after 27 years of service, she then began working for Akron Public Schools in 1999 as a substitute cafeteria worker until promoted to full-time as a cashier at Firestone CLC. She was affectionately known by the students as Grandma, and she retired after 24 years of service. During this time, she also worked as a housekeeper in the home of Melaine Baird and family for many years, again she adopted them as her 2nd family. Ethel was an outstanding bowler, winning multiple bowling awards. She continued to bowl well into her 90s. She assisted in starting the Gaymon, Gibson, Miller, Ridgill (GGMR) family reunion committee. She loved cooking homemade-everything feasts for her family, and made the best desserts ever, her specialty as of late being her ‘made to perfection’ pound cake. She also loved gardening and planting flowers, especially roses. She loved to travel, and of course, she loved to dance!
Ethel was loving, stern, wise and a financial genius. She loved to pray, praise and worship the Lord. All who have been blessed to know her resound of her sweet spirit and awesome hugs. She attended various churches over the years but found her home at The United Baptist Church for many years until connecting with Burning Bush Church. She also was an honorary member of Signal of Light Full Gospel Church in Edinburg, PA. She was a mother of the church at all three ministries.
She married Frazier Gilbert King on July 8, 1948, to this union 4 children were born. After the passing of Frazier, she married Raymond Alexander Coleman on June 27, 1959. Ethel became a widow again with the passing of Raymond, December 1975. One (1) child was born to this union.
In addition to her parents, and her husbands she was preceded in death by her siblings, Horace (Ray), Clarence David, Louis Junior, Anna Lee Gibson; Mattie (Jimmy) Ellems, Ruth Colley, Josephine Brown and Luvenia Hargrove; as well as her bowling partner, and daughter in love Rose King and son in love, Prophet Milton Dean.
Ethel leaves to cherish her life and memories, her children; Brenda Isaiah, Linda Dean, Robert (Jina) King, Michael (Joanne) King, and Ella (Dion) Jenkins. A total of 18 grandchildren; James, Raymond and Brooke Greene, Twnna George, Linda Smith, Tyrerei Turner, Dakara Gritts, Kellie and Robert King, Christopher, Terrance, Delvin and Monica King, Freddie Coleman, Denise, Dion Jr. and David Jenkins, and Denikka Ray. She has 59 Great-Grandchildren and 11 Great-Great Grandchildren. Also leaving ‘adopted’ children including but not limited to, Sabrina Woodson-Wilson, Sampson Eichioya and family, Kim Wright, her “Road Dog” niece Janet Hargrove and niece Cheryl King. She leaves an army of other nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, colleagues and friends.
She transitioned from this life and her earthly tabernacle on Monday, Aug 4, 2025 at the age of 96 years young. Although we will miss her physical presence, her legacy lives on through her quiver.
