Eula T. Powers, age 95, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 20, 2020, at home in Akron OH. She was born November 6, 1924, in Jefferson, Alabama to Silas and Elna (Lewis) Thurman. She attended Street Manual Training School, a component of an idea of Booker T. Washington, before moving to Akron OH. Eula graduated from Akron East High school while at the same time working for Goodyear Aircraft during the war. She attended Wesley Temple AME Zion Church and Robert Street Church of God. Her career started with the Employment Office, then after a few minor jobs, she became the Housing Manager of Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority, from which she retired. Eula, Eddie, and two of their best friends, James and Margaret Roberts formed a traveling business called the Cascade Club. They traveled by bus to many African American historical sites throughout the US. She was also president of the Joyful Senior social club for many years. In her spare time, she tutored reading at Seiberling Elementary and worked in the voting booths, plus she was an avid seamstress. She will be remembered for her love of people, socializing, traveling, and educating.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Powers; son, Ronald E. Powers; and her sister Amy Hamilton.
She leaves to cherish her memory her brothers, Silas Thurman, Jr., Benjamin Thurman, (Jacquelyn); daughter and caretaker, Patricia Hairston (Charles); 3 grandchildren; Dorieanne Powers, Melita Polk (Rashaud), Ronald Powers II (Trista); 7 great-grandchildren, Cataya, Sherron, Lianna, Rena, Micah, Myla, and Nuri Mae; 4 great-great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, Nila, Josiah, and Nasir; nephew, Benjamin Thurman, Jr. (Heather); 3 special adopted daughters, Mona Edmonds, Camille Edmonds, and Janice Hairston; special friends, Sue and Stanley Foster, and Margaret and James Roberts; plus a host of other friends and relatives.
