Evelyn Horton was born March 13, 1931, in Leeds, Alabama to the union of Charlie Carr and Iola Gray (Jack Rutledge). She was the oldest child of 4 children. She graduated from East High School. Immediately after graduating, she joined the United States Army, where she served 2 years, then reenlisted to serve an additional 4 years. She fought/served in the Korean Conflict, while working in the post office, as well as being a medical nurse. She thoroughly enjoyed her travels and serving her country.
Evelyn has always been a strong woman who loved everyone, especially her family. Her past times consisted of social drinking, slot playing at the different casinos, playing bingo, cooking out on the grill and, mainly, just spending time with family.
She was married twice; her first husband was Samuel D. Tomlin Sr., and her second husband was George Horton, both preceded her in death.
Also preceding her in death was her mother, Iola Gray; father, Jack Rutledge; step-fathers, Robert Gray and Charlie Carr; and brother, Howard Brockman.
She leaves to cherish her memories: daughters, Jacqueline Benford (Barberton, Ohio) Lola Sarre (Akron, Ohio); 4 grandchildren, Shannon Tomlin, Willie Tomlin, Shiraun Tomlin and David Horton (all of Akron, Ohio); godson, George Dowdell; goddaughter, Faychon Knox; sister-in-love, Linda Brockman (Akron, Ohio); nieces and nephew, Stephanie Johnson (Akron, Ohio), Captain Gina Brockman (Texas), Yvetta Brockman and Howard Brockman Jr. (Akron, Ohio), and Greta Williams (Chicago, Illinois). She also leaves numerous great and great-great grandchildren, which are too numerous to name, and numerous cousins whom she loved dearly. It always brightened her day to see any one of her family members.
A Special thank you to her Legal Caregivers: Lola Sarre and David Horton, who really stepped up to the plate, who never minded riding through the storm along with her. It was always hard work, but they understood the assignment. Thank you to everyone who showed up to show her love and give her flowers and respect, while she was still able to feel the love.
