Evelyn Jeannette Jefferson, 93, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2024. Evelyn, lovingly referred to as JoJo by her husband and as Tootie by many of her loved ones, was born on July 26, 1930, in Hancock, MD to Thomas Smith, Sr. and Viola (nee Williams) Smith. When she was a young child, Evelyn’s family moved to Johnstown, PA, where she grew into a young woman, helping to care for her younger siblings, nieces, and nephews.
In 1948, at the age of 18, Evelyn met the love of her life Edward, or Eddie to those who loved him, and moved to Cleveland, OH. The two were married for nearly 70 years. To this union, two sons, Steve and Mark, were born. Evelyn devoted herself to her family, supporting them as both a homemaker and a domestic worker. She could often be found attending her sons’ sporting events, caring for extended family and friends, and serving as a second mother to the neighborhood kids.
Evelyn enjoyed cooking, quilting, family game nights, and listening to good music – she loved Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, and Mahalia Jackson, just to name a few. Above all, Evelyn loved her family. Her favorite pastimes were hosting family gatherings and holidays, researching and documenting her family history, and spending numerous Sundays cheering for the Browns with husband Eddie and sons Steve and Mark. Evelyn became known for her holiday baking, world-class macaroni and cheese, and making Christmas an experience like no other. She was also an animal lover, as the family had numerous dogs throughout the years.
Left to carry on her legacy and cherish her precious memory are sons, Steve and Mark (April); grandchildren, Chanté Jones (Doston) and Alexandria Kailer (Justin); great-grandchildren, Alexa and Amanda Jones, and Jesse and Abigail Kailer; former daughter-in-law, Carmelene Jefferson; brother, Tommy Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Preceding Evelyn in death is husband Eddie Jefferson.
The family would like to thank Ohio Living Rockynol staff for their support and loving care during Evelyn’s latter years. Condolences may be sent to 652 Crosby St., Akron, OH 44302.
