Floyd Welbon Tatum was born May 18, 1930 in Chidester, Arkansas, the youngest child of the late Alma L. Tatum and the late Ophelia Tatum. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Opal Ware, Euna Davis and Madis Tatum. Floyd was married to the late Christell Brown and to this union a daughter, Arlinda, was born. Later in his life, Floyd married Beverly Riley who also preceded him in death.
Floyd attended Glenville High School in Cleveland, Ohio for a brief time but returned to Chidester where he graduated from Chidester High School in 1948. Following his high school year, he enlisted in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1957. He followed in his father’s footsteps and decided to become a teacher. Floyd attended Arkansas AM&N and received a B.S. degree in secondary education. Floyd worked in several Cleveland Public Schools and served in positions beyond the classroom. He was a cluster liaison consultant, project manger for the human relations program, and a member of the writing team for Social Studies curriculum. He was instrumental in helping students in conflict resolution. Later in his career, Floyd served as a science specialist, a social studies consultant, and as assistant to the director of staff development. He served the Cleveland Public Schools his entire career.
Floyd was also an active member of Metro CABSE (Cleveland Association of Black School Educators) and the Cleveland Urban League an Gleve Chap UAI. With his willingness to help others Floyd also exercised this practice in the pass as an industry foreman, a squad leader in the army and many, many more accolades throughout his life journey.
Floyd enjoyed cooking and baking, known for his sweet potato pies and cobblers and biscuits. He was a master handy man and gardener.
Floyd leaves to cherish his memories, his daughter Arlinda ( Roosevelt) a niece Joan Diuf ( Omar), two nephews, Steve Tatum ( Mirian) and Abraham Davis, brothers -in -law John Brown, Talmadge Brown, Richard Witt and Gus White. Granddaughters Lindsay Jenkins and Courtney ClaytonJenkins, College roommate Lloyd Black and a host of nieces, nephews and relatives and friends. He was loved by many and will be truly missed!
