G. Gregory Freeman was born in Columbus, Ohio on January 9, 1964. His parents, George and Diantha Freeman, were filled with joy upon his winter arrival. He joined Calvary Tremont Baptist Church at the tender age of 7, where he developed his foundation, love and devotion of Jesus Christ. Later, as a teenager, he relocated with his family to Akron, Ohio and attended Akron Public Schools. He was selected as a leader in the Superintendent’s Council, was a member of Garfield Rams basketball team and a saxophone player in the high school band. He was a proud student of Garfield High School’s graduating in the class of 1982. Because he lived in the Buchtel High School cluster, he visited the school frequently and developed lasting relationships with peers in his community until many believed he was a graduate of Buchtel. He enjoyed playing basketball with his friends in Akron neighborhoods, often sharing the story of how his little sister developed the skill of basketball because he coached her with the guys in the neighborhood at Akron area basketball courts.
He attended New Hope Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor T. Dewitt Smith, Jr. as he worked in several ministries including starting New Hope’s first tape ministry. He met his then girlfriend, now wife of 31 years, Sherice Morris at New Hope Baptist Church.
While in college, he continued his foundation in Jesus Christ and joined Friendship Baptist Church (Toledo, Ohio) where he completed a rigorous Deacon training under Bishop Duane C. Tisdale. As a young man, he became Overseer (Deacon Liaison) for approximately 10 ministries at Friendship. He returned and commuted back to Toledo as a Minister and became Overseer of the Outreach Ministries.
He graduated from The University of Toledo with a Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degree. As a non-traditional student, he was selected as the runner up for the Homecoming King, served as a Presidential Ambassador, a member of Student Government, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Alpha Xi Lambda Chapter and Who’s Who Among American College Students.
In 1996, with his family, he returned to Akron, Ohio and later accepted God’s call to the pastoral ministry. He was ordained by Dr. I. T. Bradley and became a Youth Pastor. He continued his journey, joined the House of the Lord and in 2006, he was immediately called to become the Interim Pastor of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Canton, Ohio where he received further training from the Beth-El Fellowship of Visionary Churches. He was a board member of countless organizations in the Akron/Canton area, including 8 years at Emmanuel Christian Academy. He was Saluted as one of Akron’s Significant African American Males and a 2023 graduate, Class of 39 for Leadership Akron.
He was a working pastor, employed full-time at several non-profits, including the Canton Boy Scouts of America and Akron American Red Cross. He completed his journey at Stark State College as the Director of Upward Bound Math and Science and Focus on African American Males in Education (F.A.M.E.) Programs. While working full-time, he was obedient to the Holy Spirit and served 8 years as a Senior Pastor of Blackhorse Baptist Church (Ravenna, Ohio) and completed his final assignment as Senior Pastor for 7 years at Greater Peace Baptist Church (Akron, Ohio).
Greg was a prayer warrior who loved to pray for anyone regardless of their church membership status. People would find him at hospitals and nursing homes praying for friends, family and mostly elderly saints, one of our most vulnerable populations. Because of his Calvary Tremont foundation, he cared deeply for senior citizens as they loved his old-time preaching when he often quoted lyrics found in traditional hymnal books. His favorite song taught from childhood was, “I Will Fly Away.”
Greg was often full of joy that enveloped his outgoing personality. He never met a stranger, always connected deeply with people and would often pray for anyone in need of love, support and guidance. He was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, enjoyed bowling and traveling around the world with his wife and swimming in international oceans. His international vacations gave him peace and solace as he marveled at God’s wonderful creation.
