Gail M. Carter born December 25, 1942, in Munford, AL, departed from this life on April 17, 2025. She was preceded in death by her father the late Tisdale Colley, her mother the late Corine Colley, her husband the late James I. Carter, her sisters the late Rose Beard and Jeanette Turneur.
Gail affectionally known as “Mother Gail” was educated in the Munford, Al school system. She attended The University of Alabama at Huntsville to further her education. Gail eventually moved to New York where she met and married James Carter in 1964. From this union, they were blessed with one daughter, Yolanda.
Gail eventually moved to Akron Ohio when James secured a job with Chrysler of Twinsburg. Gail worked for many years in retail. She also worked in the banking industry until she retired.
Gail was a proud member of the New Hope Baptist Church for over 60 years. During this time, she served in many capacities, church secretary, and telephone operator for the radio ministry. She also served under every Pastor, past and present. She attended service regularly until her health failed and then she watched service via live stream.
Gail loved her senior citizens group “Young at Heart” and attended meetings and outings faithfully. She enjoyed listening to gospel music and accompanying her daughter Yolanda to performances with Raymond Hinton and the Anointed Voices of Praise. She served as one of the group’s spiritual advisors and was lovingly called the group’s “#1 groupie” by her daughter.
Gail was a nurturer. She loved her family and worked hard to make sure each member felt loved and cherished. She kept the children in line and made herself available to every adult during their greatest and weakest moments.
Gail leaves to cherish her loving memory, daughter, Yolanda Carter of Akron, OH; spiritual son, Raymond W. Hinton of Akron OH; niece/daughter, Teika Chavis, nephew/grandson Noah Baker of Raleigh, NC; niece/granddaughter, LaiYonah Woods, nephew/grandson, Laiden Woods of Akron, OH; 1 brother, Jerry Colley, 1 sister-in-love Elsie Colley of Akron, OH; 2 sisters, Mizzdell Glover and Dorothy Chavis of Raleigh, NC and a host of other nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
