On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, Gary Lamar Simpson, age 70, peacefully transitioned from labor to reward.
Born on May 15, 1954, in Dalton, GA, Gary was the fourth child of the late Harry L. “Suitcase” Simpson and Johnnie M. Simpson. Though born in Dalton, he was raised in Akron, Ohio, where he built a lifetime of cherished friendships while growing up on Bell Street.
Gary excelled in sports, particularly baseball and football, during his youth. He attended Akron Public Schools and graduated from Central-Hower High School. After high school, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. Though his tenure as a Marine was cut short due to injury, he was honorably discharged and remained committed to personal and professional excellence. He went on to earn an Associate degree in Applied Science in Community Service Technology and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from the University of Akron.
His passion for service led him to a career as a social worker, where he worked with adult education programs through the Urban League. Later, he transitioned to the United States Postal Service, serving as a dedicated mail carrier until his retirement.
Gary was charismatic, sometimes opinionated, but always deeply devoted to his community. He dedicated years of service to the Elizabeth Park Recreation Center, Akron Public Schools’ Career Development programs, and the Private Industry Council (PIC) Youth Motivational Task Force, always striving to uplift those around him.
Gary deeply loved his two daughters and cherished his grandchildren, often babysitting them when they were young.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Johnnie Simpson; brothers, Harry Simpson Jr. and Michael Simpson; and sister, Gwen Simpson.
Gary leaves to celebrate his life and legacy his loving daughters, Lashawna (Marquis) Grimes of Akron, OH, and Keia (Jason) Williams of Waxhaw, NC; grandchildren, Rodney Shufford, Sydney Shufford, Ishmael Williams, Julian Grimes, Isaiah Williams, and Leah Williams; sister, Harion (John) Simpson Davis of Fort Washington, MD; sister-in-law Eunice Simpson of Kapolei, HI; best friend, Luke Henley, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and lifelong friends.
Gary’s impact on his family, friends, and community will never be forgotten. His quick wit, sense of humor, and unwavering love will always hold a special place in our hearts.
