It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Gary Owen Bush Sr., beloved father, companion, and friend, who departed this life on June 20, 2025, at the age of 73. Born on March 13, 1952, in Cleveland, Ohio, Gary was the cherished son of Buddy Bush and Mary Bush, and a lifelong resident of Maple Heights, Ohio.
Gary grew up surrounded by love and laughter, spending his formative years with his six siblings: Ronnie Bush, Loretta Harris, Aaron Bush, Buddy Bush Jr. “Big,” Kevin Bush, and Patricia Smith. He received his education at Charles Giddings Elementary, Nathan Hale Middle School, and later graduated from John Adams High School.
In 1971, Gary enlisted in the United States Navy, where he proudly served aboard the USS Canopus until his honorable discharge on December 19, 1972. Following his service, he built a rewarding career in construction as a skilled roofer, where his dedication and hard work were well known.
Gary’s life was enriched by his family. He and his wife Dorrine Bush-Hines welcomed three beautiful children into the world: Dawnya Bush, the late Gary Bush Jr., and Quiana Bush. He also shared a daughter, Marcella Woods, with Debra Scott. In the early 1990s, he met the love of his life, Earnestine Jones, and together they created a beautiful life filled with love, happiness and shared experiences.
Gary had intelligence unlike any other. He had a sharp wit that kept everyone on their toes. Gary had a vibrant spirit and an undeniable love for music. He taught himself to play the drums and guitar, and was known for his passion as a DJ, filling the lives of those around him with rhythm and joy. He adored helping friends and family with their cars, relishing every opportunity to lend a hand.
An enthusiastic adventurer at heart, Gary loved spending time at amusement parks, riding roller coasters, and making cherished memories at Geauga Lake, Cedar Point, SeaWorld, and Disney World. He delighted in family outings, drive-in movies, playing cards such as Spades, Bidwis and Pokeno, construction picnics, and casino bus trips, always surrounded by the laughter of his loved ones.
Gary leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion that will forever be cherished. He is survived by his devoted wife, Earnestine Jones; his daughters, Marcella “Angel” Woods (John), Dawnya Bush (Danny), and Quiana Bush and Jeletha; His honorary children Terrence and Tisha and a host of beloved grandchildren: Gary, Juwan, Daniel, Donovan, Ashley, Ke’Sha, Treyvon, Kyler, Dominic, Jameca, Shamyah, Devin, Davonte, and Javonte. He will also be remembered fondly by numerous nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, and a host of family and friends.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Buddy and Mary Bush; his siblings Loretta Harris, Ronnie Bush, Aaron Bush, and Buddy Bush Jr. “Big”; as well as his son, Gary Bush Jr. “Junior.”
A celebration of Gary’s remarkable life will take place on June 28, 2025, at Calhoun Funeral Home, where family and friends will gather to honor his memory. Throughout this time of mourning, we invite all whose lives were touched by Gary to join us in sharing stories, laughter, and love in remembrance of a truly wonderful man.
He will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered for his unwavering spirit, generosity, and boundless love for his family and friends. May he rest in eternal peace.
