Gary was the sixth child born to the union of Willie Lee Yates and Christine Hubbard Yates in Grenada, Mississippi.
He attended Glover Elementary School and Goodrich Junior High, where he participated on the school wrestling team. He graduated from Buchtel High School in 1974. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age and was baptized at Macedonia Baptist Church.
He leaves to mourn his passing: sisters Willie Jean Yates Sessor of Cleveland, Ohio; Shirley Ann Yates of Akron, Ohio; and Cathy Yates Douglas of Akron, Ohio. Brothers John (Evelyn) Yates of Pensacola, Florida; Jimmie (Andrea) Yates of Parma, Ohio; and Willie Lee Yates Jr. of Akron, Ohio. Aunts, numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Special thanks to D.J. for the loving care he provided. He will be dearly missed by all who knew, “The Dog Catcher.”
