After a hard-fought battle with multiple myeloma and acute renal failure, George Dunbar Gilmore Jr. transitioned peacefully on July 3, 2018. He was surrounded by his loving wife and his 3 children in Camp Hill, PA at the time of his passing.
George was born in Akron, OH on July 18, 1942 to George Sr. and Lily Gilmore (both deceased). He was the oldest of four children and always spoke fondly of family members that had a lasting and positive influence on his life. He grew up on Akron’s west side where he played and exceled at football and basketball at Buchtel High School. George’s love of sports spanned his entire life as he took up playing golf in the 1970s; he also supported each of his children’s athletic endeavors by being their number one fan and never missed a single sporting event.
George was always one to seek an intellectual challenge and enrolled in the University of Akron where he earned his Bachelor’s in Business Administration in 1976. While at Akron U, he pledged and became a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. George’s intellectual curiosity extended beyond the classroom and he always sought to improve himself. He kept a dictionary by his bedside and routinely taught himself new words to expand his vocabulary and enhance his overall knowledge. George never stopped learning and firmly believed in the benefits of a solid education and encouraged his children and family members to ‘always move forward’ whenever someone was faced with a major life decision.
After returning from the Vietnam War in the late 1960’s, George met and later married Betty Smith on April 11, 1970. He and Betty lived in Akron until 1987, and then moved to Liverpool, NY where they resided for 15 years. They later moved to Fayetteville, PA in 2002 after George retired from Goodyear after 39 years of service. After retiring, and moving to Pennsylvania, George began a second career as a substitute teacher in the Chambersburg, PA school district where he loved influencing and challenging young minds. What truly made George such a remarkable and special man was his love for the Lord and his love of reading his Bible and serving as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher in the churches he was a member of throughout the years. Most recently, he was a member of Central Baptist Church in Mount Alto, PA. George also enjoyed vacationing and spending time with his family. He always taught his children n to work hard, to enjoy the fruits of their labor, and take time to reflect and plan annually.
He leaves his wife Betty (Fayetteville, PA) Gilmore of 48 years; sons Terrance (Karisma) Gilmore of Phoenixville, PA and Marcus (Margaret) Gilmore of Marlton, NJ, and daughter Cicely (Elmario) Clayton of Greenbelt, MD. George leaves five grandchildren: Isaac Dunbar Gilmore, Francis Grace Gilmore, Clarke McKenzie Gilmore, Grant Dunbar Gilmore, and Solomon George Clayton. He also leaves his brother Wesley (Estella) Gilmore and sister Gloria (Clarence) Dawson, Stanley (deceased) Gilmore, and several cousins, nephews, nieces, friends, neighbors, and church members.
